    Stupid question but......

    Hi, newbie here!

I've just started playing with video editing and use the following:

    JVC DV camcorder
    Pinnacle Studio 7
    Nero to burn CD-R

I've managed to create VCD (to give to grandparents to watch on their DVD player) but want to improve the quality (DVD player doesn't support SVCD). I was thinking of using something like Pinnacle Express to author short video clips and burn to CD-R - is this possible? If not, do I have to go for DVD-R.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    cd and dvd

There is no diffrence between cd and dvd except for space, if you want to improve the quality, there should be an option with the sampling rate, but be forewarned the better the quality the less space u have on your cd or dvd to play movies. good quality can cut playback time down by as much as half.

"There is no diffrence between cd and dvd except for space"

Since tjp specifically states that the DVD player can play DVDs (of course) and VCDs (MPEG1), but NOT SVCDs (MPEG2), there certainly WOULD be a difference in the attainable quality (MPEG2 audio and AC3 sound) of a DVD-R...

        exatcly the qaulity

quality not space dvds are cds they are just high compact, anything u can put on a dvd u can put on a cd just not as much, some dvd players just do not have the firmware capability to play vcds, or svcds, the diffrence is in the file format not the media. Svcd has so many lines of resolution as opposed to a dvd as oppsed to a vcd mpeg1 is lower than mpeg2 its not that a dvd player CANT play vcds its just that it wont. every dvd player on the face of this earth can play a vcd its just if the manufacturer has included that in the firmware or not. dvds have more than 2 times the resolution of a vcd so thats like saying you have a car that can go 60 mph but cant go 20mph. but either way the only diffence lies in the amount of space(why do you think dvd burners can burn cds) and the specications of the media being used(cds 650nm - dvds are 610? i think nm)

I guess there's little point in doing this, but I'll repeat my previous post, since the essence of it has apparently eluded you...

Hopefully, the original poster, tjp, will realize that he CAN, in fact, create higher-than-VCD resolution files in DVD/.VOB/MPEG2 format and burn them to DVD-Rs.

            HI Guys,

First of all, thanks for the replies/advice.

I think I've failed to get over the point (my fault entirely). What I wanted to do is to burn DVD format onto a CD-R (accepting that the quantity would be smaller). Basically, I'm looking at small amounts of video but wanting to get the higher quality (resolution) available with DVD rather than VCD. Having attempted to use higher resolution (XVCD) I can see that it can be difficult to create a CD-R that plays on my parents DVD player - hence the idea of taking the DVD format standards and putting the content on a CD-R. My plan was to use a product like Pinnacle Express, edit and then make DVD format but to write to CD-R rather than DVD-R.

Hope the above makes sense - as I said I'm very new to this game!

            Regards,

            tjp

tjp's original message - my question

tjp, I read with interest your original message because I have a Panasonic camcorder, STudio DV, and Nero, and I have NOT successfully created a VCD. I'll list what I've done and maybe you can tell me what I did wrong????

              1. Capture movie in STudio DV.
              2. Edit movie in Studio DV.
              3. Create "mpeg" movie in Studio DV. Plays with Windows Media Player.
              4. Open Nero, press "New", "VCD".
              5. Drag the .mpg movie file to the "image window".
              6. Press "burn".
              7. Burn appears to be successful, but when I pop the CD into the PC's CD player, and click on the drive, it shows the five files that are in the Nero burn screen (cti, mpegsav, etc.) and none of them opens the movie.

              Help!!

tjp, I forgot to say, because I couldn't do this the other day either, this time in the Studio DV MPEG settings screen, I changed the CODEC from Studio DV default to Indeo. (Just pressing buttons, hoping something works)

                  Hi dm,

I'm currently using Studio 7 rather than DV. When creating the MPEG file there is a preset 'VideoCD' setting - I used this and then did exactly the same to burn the CD. Maybe there's a similar preset in Studio DV? If so, give it a try.

                  Best of luck!

tjp, thanks. I'll keep trying. One more quick question - did you do any further "conversion" using TMPEnc or something, or just the mpeg file you had created in Studio 7?

                      Hi,

No extra conversion done to create VCD just used the output MPEG from Studio. Just a thought - make sure that the 'Standard compliant VCD' box in Nero is checked before burning.

                      Good luck.

Thank you all. I have successfully created a VCD and a DataCD, played both on the PC using Windows Media Player - pretty good quality. The VCD quality on my set-top DVD was not so good, and it froze. Any ideas?
