    avi to dvd

    Hi,

I have a question since i'm new to this area.
I put a lot of my familiy videos on my computer as avi files. Now i want to transfer them as DVDs. The problem is the following:

    1. i don't have a DVD writer, only a CD writer,
    2. i tried to create VCD/SVCD with Nero, it worked but my home DVD player does not play them (it seems that it does not accept vcd/svcd).

Now i want to transform the avi files in DVD format able to fit on a CD and then to write them on CDs.

First, please tell me if this is realistic???
Second, if yes, can you please point me to a tutorial or something like that?
Also, third, what programs do I need in order to do this??

    THX alot

Converting avi files to dvd compliant mpg will be over2 gigs so you will not fit it on a cd-r,well you could use tmpgenc to convert to dvd format but it will be huge and you can split the file up into parts but you will only be able to burn each file as data and not be able to watch it in dvd player.

I supposed the 2 GB files you are talking about are something like 60 min or more. I would not mind if i make CDs with only 20 min (2GB/3 = 600MB approx).

Do you think it can be done?

            Problem Solved

            First, THX to all.

I solved my problem in the following way:
            1. you need TMPEGEnc (preferably Plus), TMPEGEnc DVD Author and Ahead Nero.

            2. first you take avi files in TMPEGEnc and make them MPGs at low resolution (PAL/NTSC) with mp2 sound (much better for home videos then WAV uncompressed because of the space - and you won't make the difference). You can go for batch processing here - put more files and then give it a go. Here I used video bitrate of 1250kbps and audio 128kbps.

            3. you put the MPG resulted from the previous operation to DVD Author (it's very simple, each file on one track or you can put more files on one track). Also, here you can create the menu.

            4. you open Nero and go to DVD-Video, copy the directories created by DVD Author to the compilation and it will create an image (maybe it is possible to write it directly to CD but I haven't try it yet).

            5. Load the image in Nero and write it on a CD and here you have the miniDVD that works on a stand-alone player very well.

Thanks again to everybody and if someone has any question I'll be glad to help.

BTW I was able to put almost 60min on a CD.

There are VERY FEW standalone DVD players that will recognize and play miniDVDS with output to your television.

What brand and model number of standalone DVD player are you using?

                Setarip,

I thought at this and that's why I tried it on 3 DVD players (one is mine, two from friends):

                1. JVC XV-S302 (friend) - ok
                2. Philips DVD 751 (friend) - ok
                3. Matsui DVD225 (mine) - ok - I payed about 90 EUR on it, very cheap and region-free.

Now, I can't say that it will work on every DVD player, but who wants to do it can try (I wrote it first on a CD-RW and it worked on my DVD, the other 2 didn't recognise the RW so I copied it on CDR).

That's great news for folks who've got those specific standalone players (It's also quite a surprise that all of the players you tested supported this format)!

                  Thanks for posting your methodology ;>}

Not to belabor the point - but I was so impressed by your 100% success ratio (3 different standalone DVD players tested, all successfully played your "miniDVD"), that I created one myself, following your methodology meticulously.

I took my "miniDVD" to a major computer retail store and attempted to play it on 11 different brands/models of standalone DVD player - and not one of them would play it! Most of the drives interpreted the disc as a VCD, while the others didn't even recognize it as a disc ("No disc").

(Rhetorical question) I wonder what the odds are that I'd have a 0% success rate and you'd have a 100% success rate?

is that VCD encoded with nero or TMPGEnc? TMPGEnc is a way better encoder than nero is. use nero to burn the VCD, not encode.

Mini-DVD is not an official format, and so, the number of DVD players that do support is small, at least compared to official formats such as VCD or even SVCD.

Instead of arguing about which player works and which doesn't, you should all go to DVDRHelp's DVD player compatibility search page and search for players that support Mini-DVD :

                            Hi guys,

The ideea why I bought a DVD player was for me exactly to be able to put my home videos on VCDs (and later when I will get a DVD-RW on DVDs). Unfortunately I was so stupid that when I bought one I even didn't look if it has VCD/SVCD capabilities. When I got home and I looked I saw that it supported only DVDs, Kodak Jpeg, Audio CDs and MP3.

When I read the manual it said specifically "no VCD/SVCD support".

Afterwards I tried a workaround solution and I got to that miniDVD possibility.

Now, about compatibility DVD player/miniDVD you are absolutely right: I tried during the weekend 2 Sony DVD players and neither worked. Maybe my first try was a lucky streak.
