How do I create a DVD with an .AVI Movie and a .srt subtitle

Hi,
does anyone know how i can create a DVD from an .AVI Movie/file and a .srt subtitle. With programme do i need to combine these two files to burn this on a DVD.

1) Use VirtualDub (or one of its variants) with the VobSub plugin, to create a new .AVI with permanent subtitles

2) Use TMPGEnc, with the appropriate DVD template, to convert the new .AVI to DVD-compliant MPEG2 format

3) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to (EASILY) create all necessary additional DVD files - and a menu and chapters

4) Use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode...

Hi setarip,

I've downloaded virtualdub with the subtitles plugins. I opened vitualdub and I selected a .avi file. I went to filter and i selected 'subtitler'. Then i selected the subtitle file (.ssa). I looked in preview and i saw the movie with the subtitles. From this point i don't know what to do to save the movie containing the subtitles.
Can you tell me how i save de .AVI with the subtitle?

Hi!

You should first install "the handler" by starting auxsetup.exe (can be found in same dir as VirtualDub) and pressing install handler.. then press ok..

Then do the same as you did...

Then choose file> start frameserver, and save it anthing.vdr

Open TEMPEGEncoder and close the wizard..
Browse the Video and Audio source to anything.vdr
Choose your output file (anything.mpg) and press start!

Now u have it with permanent subs..

Hi Sebas. I was just thinking you might want to have selectable subtitles.
One way would be to use DVDmaestro or Scenarist for authoring, but there is an easier way.
How about converting your subtitles to sup format? (format required by the "free" ifoedit). You can take a look at www.doom9.org. I guess you have converted your avi to m2v and mp2 with your favourite converter.
You only have to run ifoedit and insert m2v, mp2, and sup to create your DVD (without menu). But, ... if you have already created your DVD with another authoring program with a menu, you can "steal" that menu (e.g. with the proper use of ifoupdate).

1) Set "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"

2) Set "Video" to "Full Processing Mode"

3) From under the "Video" dropdown menu, click on "Compression"

4) Select the same codec as the original .AVI used - If possible, set the adjustable settings to the same as the original file

6) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and enter a new filename for the modified file

How do I specify what I want subtitled?

I would like subtitles to show only when languages other than English are spoken. Using the instructions above, the entire movie is subtitled (including English scenes).

I am using TMPGEnc and Virtualdub.

I would greatly appreciate help with this.

Thank you very much. I didn't think it would be so simple. I thought I was missing a setting in TMPGEnc. I will now search for one.
