AVI to MPG audio problems

I have been using TMPGEnc to convert avi files to mpg,and then using TMPGEnc DVD Author to author the mpg for DVD without any problems,until recently.The last few mpg's created have had no sound and the run time has greatly increased.I have tried using virtualdub to sort out the audio but this makes the files huge more than 20g so i have to abort.I have also tried putting the .wav file in the audio section of the nero burning rom and i still get the same result,great picture but no sound.

Any ideas anyone?

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box


The audiostream is probably in either .AC3 format or Variable Bitrate MPEG Layer 3 (VBR .MP3).

If it proves to be .AC3:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...


If it proves to be VBR:

Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use NanDub (or VirtualDubMod) to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into NanDub
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose - and choose "No compression(PCM)"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).
Open TMPGEnc and "drag and drop" the silent .AVI onto it, then do the same with the .WAV file

Permission to pick your brains re your response post to ZippyEFCs query?
First - You refer to two items with which I am not familiar but because you bring them up in relation to avi and wav (sync) I think I could find them useful ie: NanDub and VirtualDubMod. Can you tell me where I should look for these files? I did a couple of searches in the Digests without success and I was hoping you could zero my sights.
Second - re VBR-MP3. Am I correct in assuming that 3 passes are involved? 1. To extract the .wav only. 2. To save the avi file as a silent avi. 3. Merge both avi and wav in TMPGEnc.
Third - I have quite a number of convertors/extractor in a "Video Utilities" folder, among which is VirtialDub 1.4 and TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. The 2 utilities you mention - are they distinct apps. in their own right - or are they plug-ins/add-ons to VirtualDub. If the former, will they happily co-exist with Vdub.
A lot of questions I know, but hopefully I've set them out in a way to make your response easier.

ps: The time I asked you about that "domovar-thing", I wasn't being sarcastic or anything like that. Just genuinely inquisitive - damned if I can find what it means - I couldn't even find it in Roget - perhaps because it's Russian - is it?

I created the .wav and the .avi file with no audio in the way you suggested with no problems,but when i used TMPGEnc to convert the files i get the message .wav cannot be created.I have tried this with various films and get the same message or m2v+wav cannot be created every time.Usually the output file will be just above 4 gig,could this be the reason for the failure and if so is there anything i can do about it?

Since you're not using TMPGEnc to CREATE the .WAV file, the error you've described makes no sense. Would you be good enough to post a screen capture of the actual error message generated by TMPGEnc?

When specifying an MPEG output filename, try using "Sniper.mpg", not something with "+" in the name or ending in .WAV...

Ok i did that but i now get the attached message when i load the created mpg file into TMPGEnc DVD Author.Is there anything i can do to rectify these errors?Once again thanks for your assistance.

Based on that error message from "TMPGEnc DVD Author", it's apparent that you haven't used the DVD template/wizard in "TMPGEnc".

Dont know what i did wrong previously but its worked fine now.I just started to do another film and TMPGEnc keeps closing after its analyzed for a couple of seconds,any ideas?
