Burn to dvd

Hi. I'm a newbie so please be patient I had a question regarding burning to dvd-r/rw. I wanted to burn some files on my computer to dvd and view them on my standalone dvd player. I was wondering what format the file would need to be in? My standalone says it can play dvd, cd-r/rw and vcd
