Convert .vob into workable formats

Hey
I've been having the same problem as the other guys in this thread and the answers given here really make sense.
What I am trying to do is convert a VOB into MPEG-2 so I can import it into Pinnacle Studio 8.
Using the advice given here I have sucessfully converted a VOB into MPEG-2. The mpg plays perfectly in Windows media player 9, with audio. However, when I import the mpg into Pinnacle Studio 8, there is no audio. Studio8 does not give me any error messages or anything, the audio just isn't there.
Here's what I did to make the MPEG-2 file:
Used DVD-Decripter to write the VOB's to my HDD
Used VOB-EDIT to demux the files into .m2v and .ac3 files
(only demuxed the main audio channel)
Used TPMG-enc to create MPEG-2 from the .m2v and .ac3
When looking at the properties of the file in WMP, it says that the audio and video codecs are:
Video: Cyberlink Video/SP decoder
Audio: Cyberlink Audio decoder
Thanks in advance for any help you can give !Comment

OK...this is how it's done...and it works with AC3, too. In TMPGenc go to "file">>"MPEGTools>>Demultiplex...select your VOB in the source window. Double click and save the video stream (it's an m2v)...and double click and save the audio stream (it's a AC3 WAV)...THEN: go to "simple multiplex"...select MPEG2 Program VBR...load the saved m2v in video source window (usually the audio pops in...if not load the AC3 WAV in the audio source window, and click "start". Voila...an MPEG2.Comment

How did you get the VOB...if you ripped it from a DVD your ripper program can be adjusted to create just one VOB. Never-the-less the VOBs can be combined (combine only the VOB's that actually contain the movie....they should start with VTS_10_001.vob) using AVI_MPEG_RM_WMV Joiner by Boilsoft. I believe you can also convert AC3 audio using TMPGenc (although it's been 6+ months since I tried this...I don't see much AC3). In the main screen area of TMPGenc (what you see when it first opens up) click Ctrl N to reset project. Load AC3 stream in "audio source" window and an .mp2 file will pop up in the output window. Click "start" and it will be on your harddrive. I'm pretty sure this works for AC3...could be wrong. I do it with LPCM WAV's all the time...but there is not much difference in size between .mp2 and .ac3...so I haven't bothered converting it....but I beleive it worked months ago when I was experimenting.Comment

To rsquirell:
I ripped it using DVD Decriptor
I am only experimenting right now with one of the VOB files from the disk to save on rendering time. Once I get it figured out I can worry about the whole movie.
The problem seems to be that audio file. In first post I noted that the Audio Codec listed in Properties (in WMP9) is cyberlink. Could that be part of the problem ?
I tried your idea of using TMPGEnc to change the ac3 file to mp2, but it says it can't open it. I had already tried coverting it to mp2 using BeSweet, but then TMPGEnc wouldn't marry it back to the m2v file.Comment

Like I said...it's been a whlie since I tried TMPGenc converting AC3...and don't have any to play with now. What do you hope to do with Studio8. TMPGenc DVD Author does some editing ( trimming credits, cutting out portions (ie...ads), and creating menus) as well as burning (if you have Win2k or XP)...and IT accepts MPEG2's made by TMPGenc...that should be true of AC3 vids also.Comment

Pokerjoe - I started this thread a while back. The people in this forum have been very helpful but the process remains difficult. I found an answer the the whole problem. Try using Ulead's DVD Movie Factory. I had it on my PC and never really looked at it. Turns out it takes your final movie (.vob files) and makes an MPEG2 file out of it. No problems w/ audio/video. Then you can take that file and stick it back into Pinnacle. It makes things so much easier. Try it, then buy it if you have to. It's worth the investment.Comment
