Hi, newbie here again....I have a query...the movie ...Planet of the apes....I used decryter to rip to hard drive....and then used shrink and full disk option...I unchecked the foreign languages but still the movie is 1,464mb which is too big for the dvd? do I have to use the re- author to get it to size...I thought that shrink would do it automaticall when it did the analysis....or am I not understanding something? doesn't it compress the movie as it does its thing?

Corsair,
You are welcome.
As to the burned dvd's playing do you have that sorted yet? I have a Pioneer standalone also and might be aware of some media with better compatibility if you try burning with DVDDecrypter.
To burn the 'Shrink files all you need is to download (from Coujo.de) the IMGTools Clasic v. 0.91.1 and follow the easy to understand included guide. The major problem is setting first path (after install) of "SOURCE DIRECTORY", only click the title folder once (of the 'Shrink files (movie)) and then go to the ISO folders you made before the burn and click all the way to the VIDEO_TS folder and click it then click OPEN, then Click SAVE, then click IMAGE. It's easy to use after 2 to 3 back-ups and very good results and high player compatibility. Also, do not put labels on back-ups.
Post if problem/success, we are glad to help you.Last edited by Quality's Proof; 8 Feb 2004, 11:33 AM.Rig :

rosy,
Hi,
First, which version of 'Shrink are you using (v. 3.1.5 Beta 4 is now available). When shrinking a movie most people de-select (remove) any foreign language subtitles (sometimes saves 10 or more mb's),
Then they select the better audio stream (only one audio stream (unless you intend to have dts) which they expect will still sound good 20 years from now) and which they can play on the television and hear today.
Then they de-select the extras (makes room for better video quality) and some even set the start/end (in Re-Author mode) to remove most of end credits or all of them (makes more room for better video quality of main movie), some also set the start to remove any "lead-ins" ( at start of movie saves room...).
The better the video quality you can make the back-up the better it will look 20 years from now, as most will undoubtedly upgrade to HDTV's of the future which will make a non Deep Analysis shrunken movie appear "VHS like".
So, important to do Deep Analysis if very much compression is done and quality of original movie is "marginal" or copy will have "pumping effect" (low quality).
You can set DVDShrink to "Automatic" and check Deep Analysis if you want and 'Shrink will automatically shrink the movie for you.
But...DO NOT select still pictures of the menu items as player may have problem playing back-up.
So, to learn how to use 'Shrink (you know you want to) visit the dvdshrink.info site and view the easy to understand guides and then you have a good idea of what to do.
If you have problem/success do post and we will be glad to help.
P.S. I have Planet of the Apes (old version) on VHS, how's the DVD video quality, or is yours a newer release?Last edited by Quality's Proof; 8 Feb 2004, 11:59 AM.Rig :

You are welcome.
Yeah, Planet of the Apes. (Beneath the Planet of the Apes), I've had for awhile and haven't watched it yet (got 100's of movies haven't watched yet)...................so many movies and "so little time".
BTW..........If you have any problems burning there are 2 freeware solutions : DVDDecrypter (ripper and ISO burner) and IMG Tools Classic v. 0.91.1 (ISO maker so 'decrypter can burn) Classic is from Coujo.de Works very good for many persons.
Post if you have problem and we try to help you.Rig :

Hi guys
Everything looks ok now.
No more freezes. I'm using Traxdata with 100% success. No labels...
DvD Srhink analysis of the burned disks as you suggested prooved very helpfull.
I'm a little lazzy and i tend to use DvDXCopy Platinum more often than DvD Decrypter & DvD Srhink. It takes only 35-40 min to have a final copy with flauless quality.
I remember the pre-Dvdwriters era... when i spend 5-6 hrs just to rip a DvD movie in 2 VCD's, dealing with subtitle issues, Bit rate calculators, authoring programs and AVI/MPEG convertors...
Completing the job with couple clicks is'nt so bad.... is'nt it ?

Corsair,
Congrat.'s. Glad to hear you are ripping/burning with 100 % rate.
Do state, if you would, what you are now doing (in order), so that others may be helped by your posting, with their ripping/burning, by posting the steps of your ripping/burning, what software you rip with and how (all files, etc.), compressing movie (shrinking), which burning program, what speed(s), which media brand (2X, 4X, etc.), the type of burner, was the label(s) on disc(s) a problem for player, etc..
As you know, there are more than 1 solution to some problem(s) and your posting the particulars of your method(s), will help others to understand how to better rip/burn dvd movies.
Do post if you have another problem(s), also, as we are glad to help you.Last edited by Quality's Proof; 10 Feb 2004, 03:09 PM.Rig :

Ok Q.P
I just rip the movie with "DvD x copy Platinum" in advance mode
(i usualy prefer to copy the full DvD, incl. menus and extras)
There's nothing much to say about the procedure here...is just 2 clicks. I've set the temp dir for the created files from the settings tub.
When the ripping ends and before the burning, (dvd x copy window remains open and idle) i check the ripped files with DvD shrink (click on "Open files button"). If all is ok then i go back to
dvd x copy window and click on the "Start" button for burning.
Sometimes i use "Record Now Max" or "HA CD Burner".
I never use "Nero" cause it uses its own "Aspi manager" and there's a compatability issue with some of my friends standalone players. Not on my Pioneer thought.
Checking the burned disk with DvD shrink (click on "Open files button") is a good idea (your idea).
I used to stick labels on my copies but not any more.
I'm not saying that using "DvD x copy Platinum" is the best way.
In the past i used DvD Decrypter and Smartripper to transfer the movie to HD and DvD Shrink or DvD2one to re-author the files.
Sometimes if a DvD is small enough to be copied to a DvD-5 media
without prior shrinking, i use DvDfab, which i believe is the best for this case.
No matter what method i use, my opinion is that the media can do the difference. I use Traxdata (DvD- 4x) now with no errors. My burner is Plextor 708A and i always burn 4x.
Here's some nice guides for rippers incl DvDXcopy & DvDFab
http://www.doom9.org/ (click on "guides")
Hope to help a little.....

Yeah.......You helped more than a little, you did good.
If you want to try a "one-click" method, there is a freeware G.U.I. at mrbass.org : autoShrinkISO v. 3.1 (for 'Shrink versions 3.1 and later) which automates the 'Shrink, mkisofs, DVDDecrypter burning process and if you want to verify the dvd files before burning.....all you have to do is leave the disc out of the burner and then check the structure and if okay, click that green arrow and burn that back-up.
Glad your burns are playable. Yeah I have that entry-level Pioneer (now less than $80.00 at Wal Mart (when in-stock.......they sale them fast)), plays everything which is burned correctly.Rig :

Hi Qp and ..friends
Visited the site you recomended and found it very interesting.
Already copied "Stargate" with it. Excellent quality and as you said
"just one click"...
A bit slower than DvDXcopy though, but at least its freeware.
thanks for the tipComment

You are very welcome.
P.S. Yeah, I have Stargate, too. Don't fall for that Extended Version, though as video quality wasn't "mastered" like regular movie.Rig :
