    AVI to MPG2

I am trying to convert from Divx to Mpeg2 and I am trying this process which should work without problems.

use VirtualDub to extract audio to PCM format
use VirtualDub to extract video in non-compressed AVI
use Tmpenc to mux both audio and video into MPG2 format

The only problem I am having there is that when it muxes/compresses the audio it errors out that it can't decode the audio I thought this may be a bad file so I created new files and still the same error. I tried this with other avi files and the same errors too Is there some codec I am missing or something corrupt?

    thanks

If you're starting witha DivX_format .AVI file that contains both video and audio (as long a sthe audio's NOT in .AC3 format), there's no need to go to the trouble of first separating the video and audio streams and then remultiplexing them. Simply load the DivX-format .AVI file directly into TMPGEnc and go from there.

If there's something I've misunderstood about the original DivX-format .AVI, please post furtehr details about its creation.

I have 5 Divx anime files and I want to put them back to DVD (I know tedious work but its kinda fun the audio is mono and 22050hz the video is small screen. the reason for separation is that tmpenc does not accept divx files (unless I am missing something). when tmpenc creates a temporal wav file, right after that the message pops up about decoding the audio. I tried everything and I still can't get it to create an mpg file so i can create vob with dvdwise.

      Thanks

"tmpenc does not accept divx files (unless I am missing something)"

Yes, you're missing something, because TMPGEnc most certainly accepts DivX files for input and conversion. As a matter of fact, that is, perhaps, its primary function.

Have you downloaded and installed the companion VFAPI plugin from the same site at which you downloaded TMPGEnc?

Are you, by any chance, limiting yourself to merely using the "wizards" or templates in one of the later versions of TMPGEnc?

"Have you downloaded and installed the companion VFAPI plugin from the same site at which you downloaded TMPGEnc?"

Can you make my life easier and tell me?

"Are you, by any chance, limiting yourself to merely using the "wizards" or templates in one of the later versions of TMPGEnc?"

Yes, but I am setting the bitrate to 3000kbps CBR

          <buttering up>

Oh wise one please show the way to heavens of correct encoding?

            Not appreciated...

Be that as it may, this is what I do:

To create an MPEG2 (NOT SVCD):

            1) Load .AVI file into TMPGEnc
            2) Set to "System Video and Audio" (lower right side)
            3) Click on "Setting" radio button
            4) Click on "System" tab, change mode to "MPEG2 Program (VBR)" (from default of "MPEG1")
            5) Click on "Advanced" tab, change "Video arrange method" to "Center (Custom Size"), change dimensions to the same as those shown under the "Video" tab (or change both "Video" and "Advanced" to whatever you prefer)
            6) Change "Source aspect ratio" to either "4:3 525 line (NTSC 704x480)", "4:3 525 line (NTSC)", or "16:9 525 line (NTSC)" - If you're in the PAL world choose either of the two similar PAL settings instead
            7) Under "Video", if not already reflected, change mode to "MPEG-2"
            8) Change bitrate to "1150"
            9) Change "Rate Control Mode" to "Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR)
            10) Enter a new filename for output and press "Start"

If I load the DIVX files directly into tmpgenc then I get a message that the file is unsupported. You mentioned about VFAPI plugin. I have downloaded the files from tmpgenc and installed it and I still get no joy. Is there another plugin I need or is my DIVX codec installed on the PC the wrong one? (V4.12)?

I cannot change the bitrate if I use CQ_CBR, there are min and max levels to set though. Isn't 1150 too low? I am extremely comfortable with 3000 as the anime does not jerk or pause at this frame rate. The anime video size is 352x240 and I want to resize this to NTSC 704x480 will tmpgenc do the resize for me?

BTW using tmpgenc plus 2.51.33.127. does that make a difference? used the older ones and still got the same message.

once this is in mpeg-2 ho wdo you burn it so it will play on a standalone dvd player?

AM i understanding this correctly..you can take a divx avi file, convert it to mpeg 2 and burn it so it will play on a standalone dvd player or on power dvd or windvd?
I am very interested in learning how to convert to either make dvd's this way or svcd dvds this way.
                Thanks

its not that simple, after you have converted to mpg2 you have to author the files into dvd format for it to work. you will need to use dvd junior/dvd wise or a authoring program of your choice to do it.

                    TMPGenc barfs on AVI

I am trying to make my MPEG2 from a DiVX AVI with TMPGenc. However, it gets to about 98% done on a 3.7GB AVI and goes into that "not responding" netherworld. GRRRRRRRR! 24 hours and it dies! Frustrating. Any ideas why it would do that?

don't know about that... what i do is take the long way.. i use virtualdub and save a new avi file in uncompressed format make user you have full processing on both the audio and video to get the app to save uncompressed. then I use tmpgenc to make the mpg2 file.

                      hope this helps

PS. have lots of space a 148MB divx = 12.5GB uncompressed avi file

this is the info I been looking for... for ages!!!!!!!!... great forum...

Anyway... satarip... great little guide, gonna be very useful!!. I`ve been trying to Convert DivX to MPEG2 for days now and had little sucess... Basically I can convert and burn to DVDr which plays on the pc perfectly.. but... when I`m trying to play on the ps2.. i get jerky images and also no sound at all.. I have been told that the mpeg1 sound stream can`t be read by all DVD players and also it seems the PS2.. Does anyone know a way to extract the MPEG1 sound and encode it into a workable format like.. PCM, and then to be encoded back into the MPEG2 file so it can then be authored to DVDr????? I think satarip may have solved my puzzle of the jerky images, so now its just the sound I need to sort out..

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

                        Kind Regards
