I have the HP DVD100i which uses the DVD+RW format. This format can be played in most newer DVD players. It is an internal EIDE drive. It cost me $600 but I think the price is now $500. It also does CDRW. I've had no problem with it so far (knocking on wood).
In another year the price should be, I repeat, should be $100 to $200 cheaper. But in this day and age you never know for sure.
If you just want to burn DVD-R, and maybe DVD-RAM, check out the Panasonic LF-D310. I got mine for $335 bucks, but check pricewatch.com.
It works wonders... as long as you don't need to use DVD-RWs.
I got one of the Panasonic drives, but in the Uk they are a lot more than that. I paid £500 for my burner, but I must say the DVD Ram is outstanding. Where did you get yours from?

I don't actually remember... I watched pricewatch.com until I saw a good deal. I've ordered so many parts over the internet that I forget what parts I got from what sites.
