I know this may seem like a dumb question to most people but can someone tell me what I need to do to burn an AVI file onto a DVD-R to play in my stand alone player. I am interested in downloading AVI's online and them burning them to play. I have successfully burnt a DVD to a DVD-R so I am familiar with the burning process, if someone can just tell me what I need, I'd appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Since there are presently no standalone players that recognize .AVI format (whether compressed with DivX or otherwise), you would first have to convert the file into a useable format.
The most costly and complex choice would be to convert the file to DVD format (MPEG2 in specific .VOB format, together with .IFO files), using DVD authoring software and DVD-Rs.
If your standalone player is capable of playing VCD (or SVCD) format and you find a brand of CD-R or R/W CD (more likely) that it will recognize, the less expensive and less complex approach would be to convert the file to MPEG1-VideoCD (or MPEG2-SuperVideoCD) format, using TMPGEnc (excellent freeware) and burning to CD-R (or R/W CD) as Video CD (or Super Video CD)using NERO Burning ROM.
