Is this possible???

I have been attempting to make a compilation disk from my hard drive of clips and I was using Windows movie maker to cut, add transitions, and convert exported project to an AVI file. I was attempting to use TMPGEnc to encode the file to MPEG-2. After 10 hours the file was completed. I was attempting to use IF0EDIT, but it's asking for a .m2v file?
In TMPGEnc I used the settings:
Stream Type: MPEG 2
resolution:720 x 480
aspect: 1:1 (VGA)
frame rate: 29.97 fps
rate control mode: 2 pass variable
Format: NTSC with interlaced checked
Motion search: Super high
everything else was left alone.

The plan, or shall I say the dream, was to use IFOEDIT and then be able to burn the results using Recordnow. Am I in the right direction or is moviemaker confliting with another process?

Instead of using IFOEdit, one set of procedures (other posters may/probably will suggest alternative methods) would be:

1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI (DivX-compressed or otherwise) to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)


**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress


If your O/S is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode
(As an alternative to "TMPGEnc DVD Author", you could use "DVDLab")

Just to clear up any confusion. I found an old freeware version of TMPGEnc that is strictly an MPEG Encoder. This is my first attempt at this aspect of video. I know how to backup my DVD's, but was attempting to start compiling tv series and burn them onto DVD as opposed to purchasing them, ie Alias. I am experimenting with a compilation of clips from my hard drive. How else can I author the video (freeware) if not by IFOEDIT? Has everything I explained in my previous post possible? Windows movie maker is really easy edit and make transitions. If this software is not recommended, what would you suggest.

TMPGenc is freeware (after the 30 day trial runs out)....but it'll only make an MPEG1. To get an MPEG2 (which TMPGenc DVD Author needs) pay the $40 and get a real TMPGenc version.

If I purchase the "real version" will it circumvent the use of other programs? I was planning on getting the up to date version if I understood, and was happy with the results of this project first. Is there a version that has mpeg-2 encoding and authoring in one package? I don't want to spend money, if there is a way to perform this task otherwise. I have heard that virtualdub is another option.

If that "free" version is a trial that has expired you'll have to pay. If it's something you downloaded off warez or something...and they don't have registration info on you at Pegasys then you can get a trial to check out. If your version was downloaded from an unknown source you'll want to uninstall it and hope some component doesn't conflict with the "real" program....but if it's an expired trial that you buy, it will install over the old (but you still may want to uninstall first just to make sure....(and VirtualDub doesn't make MPEG2's....I'm not aware of any freeware that does.)

Yes...read setarip's response....but first he has to make the AVI an MPEG2...oh....I see, a different program than TMPGenc DVD Author....will it take an AVI?

No, he can convert his AVIs to MPEG1 (VCD format with a tweak or two) and they'll be perfectly DVD-compliant.

Anyway, as I understood the question, he was asking about freeware DVD authoring software. He already has a freeware encoder.

I have the beta12a version, so I am assuming that this is MPEG 2 compliant. I am new to this and was requesting guidance to learn how to use these programs. I have read different forums and been informed that there are freeware authoring tools such as IFOEDIT and DVDauthorGUI, but I don't understand some of the terms used to operate these programs.

It's the MPEG2 that requires you to spend the money....but as digidragon pointed out...you can make an MPEG1 VCD using freeware...but VCD's don't play in many stand-alone DVD players...you'll want to check your player's documentation to see if it'll work before you go thru the effort. You can make a VCD by selecting that template in TMPGenc...and burn it to a CD disc....but if you insist on making a DVD...you need the MPEG2...(or will DVD Author take a VCD? TMPGenc DVD Author won't)

You misread my post. I was pointing out that a VCD MPEG1 (with audio at 48000Hz, and GOP settings tweaked - both of which tmpgenc can do) is a legal and valid format for DVD. So the resultant DVD should be playable on any player, regardless of whether it plays VCDs or not.

Actually, if I remember correctly, MPEG-2 capability wasn't available in TMPGEnc until v.1.2C...
