No sound when encoding using TMPGEnc

Hi everyone,

I apologise if this has been asked before but I couldn't find specific information on the forum.

I have a xvid file that I want to convert to dvd format using TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. I have done this loads of times before successfuly, using the avi file as the audio source. But this time the audio compression is (Unknown tag 2000) which I've heard is AC3 so I installed the required codec.

After converting the avi using TMPGEnc the wav produced had no sound, the original avi has sound when played back though. I tried using DVD Santa to convert the avi and it worked fine but as it was a demo it has banners everywhere and I don't want to have to pay the money for the full version.What can I do in TMPGEnc to fix this, I tried converting another avi file straight after and it worked fine, it just seems that TMPGEnc doesn't like the avi I am using.

I tried to open the file in VirtualDub 1.5.10 but when it loads it come's up with the error message

Warning: Nothing to output Bframe decoder lag

Copying from my 'library' of popular fixes, I found this;

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to one greater than the highest priority of listed items.. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

Thanks for replying, I have already found this fix before my post and had no success. The Direct Show Multimedia Reader is at 1 and all the others are at 0.

Any other suggestions

AFAIK, to get AC3 input in TMPGEnc you need the AC3 Audio plugin.

"TMPGEnc" (and several other programs) are very finicky about correct .AC3 headers - and it seems that most .XviD-.AC3 files do NOT have the "perfect" .AC3 headers.

Use "AC3FIX" to correct...

Thanks for all your help, I managed to do it in the end. I used VirtualDubMod to demux the audio into a ac3 file, them encoded the video only in TMPGEnc then put the two together when I authored the dvd in TMPGEnc DVD Author.

Very unusual that "TMPGEnc DVD Author" would accept the same .AC3 audiostream (demuxed or not) that was rejected by "TMPGEnc"...

I found I guide on the net telling me how to do it, it was the first time I had used Virtual Dub Mod and first time I had used the method of demuxing with ac3. So I never tried using the ac3 file as the audio in TMPGenc Plus as I just followed the guide, so it may of worked. I only know the basics and when I encode avi to dvd usually I just use the video source as the audio.

One last question to you though - Are you CERTAIN that the audio file you used for input into "TMPGEnc DVD Author" was, in fact, .AC3, or is it possible that using VirtualDubMOD to demux, you also converted the audiostream to .WAV format?

It was ac3 as it had the ac3 extention and also the file size was only 400mb for a 1.55hr film

I've demux'd my ac3 stream with vdubmod but it doesn't work....

It is recognised as a AC3 stream with GSpot but TMPEnc DVD Author wont recognise it....

I can't even play the AC3 stream using mplayer (The linux mplayer that is, win32 version). Works in PowerDVD tho...

Well I found a program called ac3fix and now it works fine in TMPGEnc DVD Author, but not in mplayer (which doesn't matter).

So if you still can't get ur ac3 to work in TMPGEnc DVD Author try running ac3fix over it
