TMPGEnc Author Query

Hiya again


I changed over an AVI to MPG no probs there I even got it onto DVD np either but when I played it its was crap to say the least.

Back I went to TMPGEnc Author and I went into Edit and checked out and what i see is individual frames but some are merged together some are hiding under another cell!!

So my query is do I have to Edit these merged cells out to get a better quality or is there a programme that I can use to sort it out??

Open the original AVI file in "VirtualDubMod" ("File" > "Open Video File"). Then go to "File" > "File Information" and post everything that is listed in both the video and audio sections of the dialog box, or post a screenshot of the information.

The average bitrate of the original mpeg file is at 841Kbps for an hour and 36 min video - that might explain why the quality is "Crap" as you refer to. How did you obtain this file?

1) Despite what you THINK you are seeing in TMPGEnc DVD Author, it does not display individual frames

2) Try the following - WITH THE ORIGINAL .AVI:

One set of procedures (other posters may/probably will suggest alternative methods) would be:

1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI (DivX-compressed or otherwise) to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)


**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress


If your O/S is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode
(As an alternative to "TMPGEnc DVD Author", you could use "DVDLab")

Okies this is what I have been doing -

Converted the AVI into MPG with TMPGEnc Author - then cos I got a crap playback on the DVD, I went back to TMPGEnc Author and went to Chapter Edit where Ive been removing the bad frames/cells with this - usually you do this to make chapters but this is how i got round my other problem I had in December by joining 2 Frames/Cells together. I then delete all the chapters I made (Bad Frame/Cell) and then go on to make the DVD.

Bad frame/cell = where it is doubled or has another one hiding under it. (Enclosed Snapshot of said Bad Frame/Cell)

You must mean "TMPGEnc" or "TMPGEnc Plus" (the regular encoding program) as ""TMPGEnc DVD Author" does not accept AVI files directly.

You should be able to just "Delete" the "Doubled" portion of the frame in "DVD Author" by highlighting it (by clicking the "Previous" or "Next" button) then when you have that particular frame selected, click the "Set as Start Frame" button. After that, click the "Next" button once selecting the next frame in the sequence and click the "Set as End Frame" button. Then "Right-click" on the "Doubled" frame that should now be isolated (selected), and from the menu select "Cut currently selected range".

Yes Ormonde I did mean TMPGEnc - I do have fingers with attitude when typing lol

And thats exactly what Ive been doing to Edit the Doubled Cells out with.

So do I have to do this manually then or is there a prog out there that can do this whilst I spend the time (upto 2 hours manually) doing it for me

I don't know of one...

I record to DVD from DVB streams and am seeing an increasing number of these merged frames in TDAuthor. Personally, I ignore them and am wondering if they are in fact indicative of your "crap to say the least."
I suggest you may simply be removing more frames from an already poor file.

EXACTLY what procedures are you using under TMPGEnc (NOT TMPGEnc DVD Author!) to initially convert your .AVI to DVD-compliant MPEG-2 format?

From AVI to MPG I use TMPGEnc -

DVD PAL (16.9) is the format I pick - wizard does the rest.

Then I use TMPGEnc Author to make the VIDEO_TS / AUDIO_TS folders before using it again to write the DVD. I do have NERO 6 as well.

I have found before that when I removed the merged frames with TMPGEnc Author the DVD has gone on to play perfectly with no distortion, hence my conclusion it was the merged frames doing it.

I have looked all over to see if this a problem that anyone else is getting but as yet Ive not found much info on it.

is the original .AVI in PAL (25fps) or NTSC format (either 23.976fps or 29.970fps)?
