Ripping vs. Transcoding to Mpeg2.

Well, this what I do now.

3 steps:

1. Capture to mpeg2 file. (tanscode) It is encodeing while capturing.

2. Make Menues with chapters

3. Burn to DVD-R.

I use a bit rate calculator. I can adust the bitrate to make sure it fits on 4.3 gig DVD-R. I use the VBR with the deinterlace option to make the file smaller and still keep the quality.

I'll check out SmartRipper for the other option.

Is smart ripper (ripping to HD) faster than the capture method? What is faster for the whole process of backing up a DVD to DVD-R? (with chapters and menues)

Another Question

I have been lazy and have not learned how to rip yet. I've just been capturing and authoring.

Does it take longer to rip or capture? Which one is better quality?

Well

Captureing will always be shorter than ripping, because it is only a 2 step process--capture and burn. Depending on the capture card that you have the quality can be the same or it can be lower than that of ripping. Captureing is also many many many times more flexible than ripping.

Thanks for the info. I thought that capturing had positives, but was not sure because I have not got into ripping yet.

I just started a new thread asking pretty much the same thing.

If you look at the the DVD to DVD-R straight copies thread, you will see that I posted a reply to a guy that wanted to know the best way to backup to DVD to DVD-R. I said that Nero was the best if the source DVD was smaller than 4.3 gigs (click n copy), but that I captured to mpeg for the longer movies. setarip said that I was misleading people because its not a true copy because when u capture as oppose to ripping, you dont have the chapter breaks anymore. Thus NOT a real duplicate, and that I should not be posting to that discussion. What???

I dont know what setarip is talking about. Captureing and ripping are doing the same thing, making copies from data provided. One is just doign it diffrently than the other. Captureing produces the same quality but at much less the effort, true you dont get chapter breaks that were inclueded on the dvd, but hey you can put them in yourself. Also I seriously seriously seriously doubt that anybody will be able to st8 up rip lord of the rings and put that on a single dvd-r unmodified, but you can sure capture that and put it on a dvd-r and have the same quality.
