As of right now you have 3 options:
    --------------------------------------------------
    Panasonic RAMBO (LF-D311)
    SUPPORTS: DVD-R and DVD-RAM.

FOR Cheapest available at around $300
DVD-R is the most compatible format in terms of playing in existing drives

    AGAINST Slowest. 1X DVD-R and 1X DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM can't be played in desktop players
    --------------------------------------------------
Pioneer DVR-A03 (or, coming soon, DVR-A04)
    SUPPORTS: DVD-R and DVD-RW

    FOR Records DVD-R at 2X
DVD-R is the most compatible format in terms of playing in existing drives
DVD-RW has good compatibility, but not as good as DVD-R
Price is OK at around $350+

AGAINST DVR-A04 is no faster than DVR-A03
    Slower than DVD+RW
    --------------------------------------------------
    All the DVD+RW drives
SUPPORTS: DVD+RW, but currently NOT DVD+R

    FOR Fastest - DVD+RW at 2.4X vs 1X DVD-RW
    Supports CAV for extra speed

AGAINST Most expensive, but closing; Ricoh is $379, Sony is $429 with $50 rebate
DVD+RW format is the least compatible with existing drives
Current burners don't support DVD+R (and never will)
No info yet on DVD+R compatibility

    Bottom line:
If you care about speed more than compatibility then Ricoh or Sony DVD+RW looks good.
If you care about compatibility more than speed then get the Pioneer
If you care about price above all, get the Panasonic or wait and see what happens in 3-6 months.
If you're confused or nervous as hell, wait and see what the next generation DVD+R drives can do.
