What SW do you use to author Videos?

I'm fairly new to editing Videos and I'm wondering what software most people find the best for autoring videos. I'm converting home videos and writing them to DVD's.

I have a pentium 4 - 3.0 ghz with 1 gig of ram and an IOMega Super DVD Writer. Im writing to Verbatum DVD-Rs with Intervideos WinDVD Creator 2 and I've only had one success out of three tries.

The problem is I don't remember doing anything different on all three that I made.

Also anybody have a process that works successfully all the time?

TMPGEnc DVD Author for simple menus, DVDLab for more complex. Tried Ulead Movie Factory a few times, but had audio sync probs.
