    Nero VE 2 VOB problem

I am attempting to create a DVD from a couple of VOB files using Nero VE 2. These are "home made" movies which gave been burned on a DVD, then copied to my hard drive.

When I attempt to add a VOB file, it is split into many video segments (.mpg files) each approximately 30 seconds long. The segments can be merged in VE. However, there are pauses every 30 seconds on playback in the editing screen.

This creation of video segments does not happen when I import a .avi file.

I have updated Nero VE 2 to the lasted version. Is this just how Nero handles conversion of .VOB to mpg files or am I dong something wrong.

Normally, VOB files are part of DVD structure that includes other files as well (e.g. IFO), which results from DVD authoring. What software did you use to author those VOB files? What was the original format of those home movies? In any case, you might need to re-author your video files, and I believe that some DVD authoring programs will accept VOB files, but check the forums. I'm not sure about the Nero software you are using, but I believe there are some VOB joining freewares you might want to try out.

Thanks for your reply. The orginal DVD was created from VHS tape onto DVD-R (finalized) by means of a Panasonic DVD recorder. I have tried copied VOB and ripped VOB files. With both, Nero converts the video into many small (30 second).mpg video segments.

IAlso, I renamed the mymovie.VOB file to mymovie.mpg. Nero VE will accept the file, but only the first 30 second video segment.

My goal was to add nice menus and then burn a DVD.

Through Google I found several other Nero VE users with the same problem....but no reported solution.

Anyone out there actually use Nero 2 for transcoding VOB files, editiing and then authoring...........without dealing with 30 second video mpg segments. I must be doing something wrong.

Those 30 second clips seem odd, so something might be amiss. You might want to try some other way to add your menus. There are several and a search of the forums should turn up some. If you want really, really simple menus, there is something called TitleWriter (freeware). For more control of menus, try TMPGEnc DVD Authoring, and for more complex menus DVDLab works well.

          Mega,

Thanks for the suggestions. I had always thought I would endup using TMPGEnc DVD Authoring. But Nero Vision Express came with my burner. It is bugging me that I can't seem to get it to transcode .VOB into .mpg without breaking the movie into small video segments. The tutorials do not mention this. (I have tried this with a number of VOB files). I wonder if I should try ripping a commercial DVD and trying importing the main .VOB with Nero Vision Express? Maybe I will get one .mpg file?

Give it a shot. And I hear you about using what came with your burner, I've done that, too, and use Roxio once in a while for that reason. But in the end, there are different tools for different jobs. A little messing around, and you'll find what works best for you.

              Mega,

I did rip a commercial movie, The Italian Job, with DVD Decryptor, and the main movie (.VOB) was converted to one large .mpg file by Nero Vision Express (as you would expect).

I then ripped a home made DVD. (VHS tape recorded to DVD on a Pansonic DVR recorder). Nero converted it into those tiny (30 sec) video segments. Looks like Nero is too sensitive to something in the recorded DVD.

Looks like I will move on and check out TMPGEnc DVD Authoring and DVDLab.

Does the Panasonic-created DVD playback properly?

If it was a commercial VHS tape, the ripping program may be "gagging" on the Macrovision protection signals found on virtually all such tapes...

Actually, it was camcorder video of Christmas transferred to the DVR (S-video). But I have also tried home VHS (birthday party etc) recorded by the panaonic DVR to DVD's. In all cases, Nero transcodes the .VOB files to small (30 second) video segments (.mpg).

The home DVD's can be copied with Nero express and individual VOB's copied,

Strange situation. Doesn't seem to be any way to get Nero Vision Express to transcode "home made" finalized DVD's into more than small video segments.

Nero VE has no problem with ripped commercial VOB's.

Sorry missed your first question. Yes the Panasonic DVD's play back in everything I have tried....Computer and players, old and new. The VHS tapes are 22 years old and, after transfer, look better than the orginal VHS. But I have also tried this with Cancorder Hi8 recorded to DVD. Resulting in these small mpg video segments

Incidentally, Nero Vision Express has no problem with .avi files recorded on my digital camcorder and uploaded to my PC.
No breaking up into video segments when transcoding.

Please explain, if you already have a successful DVD, what are you trying to accomplish with NERO Vision Express?

Ok, my long term goal was to put together compilations with nice menus. Children's birthdays, Xmas's etc. I have years of old VHS tapes copied onto DVD's.....copied in chronological order. I realize this is much more complicated then what I am trying to accomplish here.

Short term, there is a glitch in Camcorder to DVD process. For some reason, when using a Sony Camcorder as the source of analog video, the Panasonic DVR trashes the menus, although the video quality is excellent. (This was discussed on another forum with no solution). So I have some recent DVD's with no menu. So I thought I would take a DVD composed of Thanksgiving and Christmas, put in a menu, reauthor, and generate a new DVD.

Plus I have Nero Vision Express 2.0 and it is now bugging me that I can't figure out why it transcodes into these 30 second video segments, on only "home recorded" VOB's

                        Thanks for your help

Try using "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (Different than "TMPGEnc" and "TMPGEnc Plus") instead of NERO Vision Express.

You can obtain a free FULLY functional trial version at:

Success. In case this happens to anyone else, I am posting my solution. I was attempting to create a DVD from a couple of VOB files using Nero Vision Express 2. These are "home made" movies (VOB’s) which had been recorded on a DVD. The original movies were VHS or Camcorder videos which were then converted to DVD-R’s (and finalized) through a Panasonic DVR. The VOB’s were then ripped to my hard drive with DVD Decrytor.

When I attempt to add a VOB file, it is split into many video segments (.mpg files) each approximately 30 seconds long. So a 5 minute VOB would result in 10 mpg video segments in Nero.

I did rip a commercial movie, The Italian Job, with DVD Decryptor, and the main movie (.VOB) was converted to one large .mpg file by Nero Vision Express (as you would expect).

I demuxed the VOB with Rejig and then ran the video and audio through ImagoMPEG-Muxer to multiplex the video and audio. The mpg file could then be added to Nero VE as one large file. The IFO mode in Rejig shows that the Panasonic created DVD’s have chapters composed of many VOB-ID X:1cell-ID’s all approximately 30 seconds in length. The ripped commercial movie typical will have one per chapter. After Nero had transcoded the files and burned the DVD, the resultant VOB chapters contained one VOB-ID 1:1cell-ID.

I have no idea why the Panasonic E-55 creates all the VOB-cell segments or really what it means. I also assume that there are probably easier was to add “Home Recorded” VOB’s to Nero Vision Express 2. But this method does work.

                              "Success."

                              Congratulations on resolving your dilemma!

Just curious, did you try "TMPGEnc DVD Author", which should have allowed you to readily overcome the problem?
