region 1 dvd ntsc, play on my pal tv?

Hi, I'm currently the winning bidder for a dvd on ebay. I cannot get this particular dvd anywhere in Ireland. The disc I'm hopefully getting from ebay is however a region 1 disc, so I presume it is ntsc format. I live in Ireland, which is region 2. Unfortunatly my television will only display pal correctly. Ntsc is black & white on it. Is there anyway I can backup this disc to display correctly on my telly? Maybe I could convert it to a pal divx .avi file and convert that file back to a set of dvd files with divxtodvd or some other converting software? Would this be a good option or would there be an easier way? The least amount of quality loss is obviously my primary aim. The film is the party animal, 1984 I think, by the way.

Doesn't matter, I've read a bit about it and there is simply too much involved. My portable in my room plays ntsc, so I guess I'll just have to look at it there.

A wise choice joe. The hardware soluton is easily better than the re-encoding one.

You would think that my tv, a mitsibishi black diamond, about 4 years old, would play ntsc. I'm starting to think maybe I could play with the settings a bit. The kids are watching ice age, all is quite, so I'll have to wait!

Check what it says in the book. Normally TVs ion PAL-Place can easily play NTSC - those in NTSC-land have a harder time playing PAL.

Unfortunatly the book from my television, along with anything else left lying around, has long since seen better times. I have a 3 and a half year old and a two year old. Nothing is sacred!

I've just realised that the remote control from the television ended up broken too, so any chance I had of being able to play with the settings are gone Oh well.

You don't need a remote to alter the settings. Usually the TVs/players have access by push buttons somewhere as well.

Mine has an on/off button a prog +/- and a vol +/-, nothing else. damn thing! Maybe its time to convince the missus to get a new, bigger, wider and down right badder tv! Have to come up with a reason, maybe take the fuse outta the plug and say the tube is gone. I don't mean to be sexist or anything, but my wife and anything electric just don't mix.
