dvd movie to dvd-r

HI! I am new to all of this so i apologize for sounding stupid. Anyway, I am interested in getting a new computer with a dvd burner but i have been finding out that copying a dvd movie to dvd -r is not possible. But I assume that there must be a way to get around it. Would someone explain to me as if I was a 5 year old? Thanks!!

There are four different formats of dvd's (visit vcdhelp.com). Not all are compatible with a stand alone dvd player. Your dvd burner would include software for authoring a dvd.
