WinDVD / Ulead No audio problem

Hey everyone,
I thought that I was computer literate, but I can't figure out how to get my video clips to play audio in Ulead 7 (I think) or WinDVD. I'm trying to edit some factory DVD's/VHS's to take out cursing, etc. The disks play fine. I've captured them to Hard drive and the clips playback fine. However, when I try to edit them, I cannot get any audio out. Any suggestions?
My system specks are above what the software calls for according to Dells techs and it appears to me to be also.
The Mute botton has an X over it, but it seems to toggle (ie the botton changes when I click it).

What type of file are they? Did you just rename the VOB to MPG - that will make no audio in some programs. For ripping the DVDs, I suggest Dr. DivX. Or try Super DVD Ripper or something. Try Ulead Video Studio 9 also.

A VOB is an MPG and any decent media player should play it with an MPG extension.

No Audio Problem when editing

My computer calls it a "movie clip" type when I allow my mouse to rest on it long enough to bring it up. Beyond that I really dont know. I captured it directly from my DVD rom through WinDVD to hard drive from a factory recorded DVD.

The software that I'm using is Video Studio 8 by Ulead and WinDVD. The problem is present in both.

I also have a mpg file that I recorded on a Kodak ez share digitial camera. I am experiencing the same lack of audio in these programs with it.

The kodak I have makes MOV files which open natively in Quiktime.

Thanks for your tips, but so far no luck. One of you talked about converting files, maybe that would work if I can find a way to do it. The Movie Clip and the MPG files play well out side of the editing mode, but they lose audio in editing.

Sounds like your source MPG files are encoded with AC3 audio. You can check this by looking at the file's "Properties" in VS7. Versions prior to VS9 need an AC3 plug-in to process AC3 sound — this has to be bought separately and I doubt if it's still available for these old versions. Some options are to:

1. Upgrade to VS9 which has AC3 processing built in.

2. Convert your source files to LPCM sound and then process them in VS7. This is what I do using Womble mpeg-vcr (which is quite a good editor in its own right). Then I open the resultant MPGs in VS7 to create a menu, the DVD file set and burn the disk. However, European DVD players have no problem playing LPCM/MPG files whereas I've heard that players in North America expect AC3 encoding. So, this procedure may not suit you.

@blutach, if you just rename a VOB to MPG that has AC3 audio, Windows Media Player will have no sound when trying to play it. At least on my PC. Try Dr. DivX to convert your DVD to an AVI - that should work perfectly.

But WMP is a piece of bloated rubbish - it probably doesn't play due to the AC3 licence reasons.

However, a VOB IS an MPG. Just a special type.

No audio in WinDVD when editing

Very insiteful, I really do not know what the acronymns stand for or mean; however, I assume that I will need to stay in the AC3 format from what you all have said due to my american dvd players. You may be correct about the AC3 liciencing issue; although, I don't understand why it only shows up in the editing mode and my home video should not show the same symptoms if that were the case, but it does.
There must be some way of turning on the sound, converting the files, or something, but I can't find it. I really don't have money to spend for new software, however I do have access to a copy of Videowave 7 Professional by Roxio, which I have not yet installed. Do you think that it would be helpful with this problem?
