i have a few .avi movie files in 4:9 display that i convert to dvd 16:9 using winavi video converter, then i get the vob files... i demux them using vob edit and get m2v and mpa, then open them in dvd lab and create chapters... then i compile... gives me the error "gop size is out memory size" near the end of the compile... i check the file it made and it's just the one vob file that plays the whole movie except at the end credits just before the last few seconds it stops. no big deal but it's done this on two .mpg files i tried... now the first .mpg i did, it worked and no errors happened. what is the problem i don't get it... and what is gop size?
GOP size is out memory size - dvd lab error

If you've got a compliant VOB (and it doesn't sound like you do), simply use ChapterEdit to create chapters. No need for DVD Lab, demuxing etc.

grr can someone explain to me what is going on? i been at this problem for like 6 hours. i know it can't be the .avi file it plays the whole thing... it has to do something with converting the avi to vobs or demuxing those vobs that gives me this error in dvd lab. any ideas please!? if i knew where the problem started i'd at least know what to think. i am clueless!Comment

GOPs (Group Of Pictures) must not exceed a fixed size in the MPEG stream to be DVD compliant. When a video stream is converted to MPEG, it is the responsability of the encoder to respect this size. Often, there is a "DVD-Video compliant" option to ensure that the resulting mpv file is really "standard".
Seems there is a bug somewhere in the tool you used to create the MPEG file, or something wrong in the options.
I don't know WinAVI. IMO, you should try another method.
It is probably impossible to fix the problem directly on your current file. But perhaps you could try to cut the last frames, and see if it helps...Comment

mpucoder's answer at doom9. Question about "GOP contains more than 36 pictures" error in Muxman. There is a reason for the gop length restriction, and it has nothing to do with picture quality (arithmetic error accummulation) or any decoder related issues. The gop length restriction sets the maximum size of the most basic unit used to compose a VOBU. And VOBU's in turn have length restrictions as well of 0.4 to 1.0 second except the last of a cell, which may be as long as 1.2 second. Having gop's longer than 0.6 seconds (the difference between the shortest and longest allowable VOBU) would create situations where it is impossible to compose a compliant VOBU.And a gop longer than 36 frames is either 1.2 or 1.44 seconds long, depending on television standard, which is longer than a legitimate VOBU.If DVB streams are not DVD compliant then they can't simply be stuffed into a vob to be played on a DVD player, they must be processed before authoring.Last edited by jsoto; 21 Jan 2006, 07:42 AM.Comment

so even though the .avi file plays fine, it could still be the .avi that is the problem? cause the converter i use has worked twice for me. i've even tried to change the options in the converter, audio settings, higher/lower bitrates, etc. still get the error. funny thing is, when i do all the converting and demuxing then compile in dvd lab, it goes half way until the full file size of the movie then the error happens. i close dvd lab and watch that one vob it created (temp file) everything is fine except the credits where it stops a few seconds before it should. im just having trouble wondering if it's the .avi or the converting or the demuxing that causes this. i think it's the actual movie ?Comment

Why don't you try some of the methods of converting AVI to DVD set out in the "READ THIS FIRST" sticky?

In my understanding, there are only two possibilities:a) Bad settings in your encoder. See the guides, and check carefully the GOP settings.b) A bug in DVDlab-> Try muxing with MuxMan. If the video is not standard, be sure MuxMan will complain. So, if Muxman accepts the file, I say the problem is in DVDlab.Well, may be a corrupt avi can also cause a bad frameserving and results in a bad encoding.....jsotoLast edited by jsoto; 21 Jan 2006, 07:48 AM.Comment

well i would use muxman but i use dvd lab cause i create chapters manually since there's none. muxman doesn't do that. winavi doesn't have GOP settings by the way. i'm gonna try all over again, convert .avi to dvd with winavi and demux with vobedit then open the m2v, mpa files in TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6... then i'll know if it's dvd lab or not. if it still gives an error, i will try the methods suggested by blutach. if those don't work i know it's the .avi file that is corrupt. let you know later.Comment

You can add chapters to muxman, using a txt file. Each row should have one chapter, the number of frame. jsotoComment
