TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 - Guides don't resolve this problem - BGM WMP10 Playback

    Hi,

Great site. I've read Jmet and others guides and can't find an answer. I've also asked this question elsewhere unsucessfully, so I hope somebody can help. First off I'm a nube and have used the following programs only a few times before.

I'm authoring a dvd using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 and noticed that there is a facility to use an mpeg for the root menu. I created a WMA file using windows movies maker which consists of 8 Jpeg frames and transitions repeated while an audio file plays in the background. I then pushed this through AIMONE Video converter to convert to an mpeg. The mpeg is approximately 40mb.

    My main problems are:

    1. WMP10 only shows the 1st frame of the background mpeg in the root menu with either no audio or approx. 2 seconds worth (PowerDVD works fine). If I attempt to play any scenes from the DVD, WMP hangs indefinitely.I have tried burning the same DVD without the motion menu and it plays back fine in WMP. The mpeg I'm attempting to use for the bgm also plays fine before and after conversion through AIMONE. It just goes to hell after I've inserted it into the project and burned the disk.

Is there something I need to download for WMP?

    2. My standalone player plays the menu perfectly with the motion menu upto a point where the mpeg loops back to the beginning before completion.

The boxes are ticked under Menu Display Settings > Motion Menu >
    Use Motion Menu
    Additional Pictures for background, etc.
Use audio of the backround video as the menu BGM.

Length of motion menu....Originally set for 10 secs which I thought was causing the the loop problem. Subsequently I changed the setting from 10 secs to match the length of the mpeg. Which inturn pushes the size up by 2.5 gb. ??Very confused as the whole file is 40mb?? If having the original setting of 10 secs only took a snapshot of the file to play then why when I adjust the time setting to match the full length does it increase overall file size by 2.5gb??

Any ideas on how to fix these problems are greatly appreciated.

If somebody could please help me out or point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

    Many thanks,

Not stupid, but very specific. You are doing something not trivial, using a not usual method and mixing different SW.
So, only if one user is doing something similar could be able to reproduce your steps and you'd have an answer.
This is not my case, I do not know anything about "AIMONE Video converter".

        @jsoto

        Thanks for the reply.

I don't know too much about Aimone either. It was recommended to me as an easy 1 click solution for converting files. What's unusual in the way I've done things? How would you create motion menus that can be played without any problems on both WMP and a standalone player? I'm not lazy, but I'm looking for the easiest solution as I know my limitations. I've been working on this for a week and now time is a premium.

I don't mind using TDA to edit the movie, then using another program to create a motion menu and insert after that. But, I'm unsure of what to use and how to do it. Any suggestions are very welcome.

        Cheers,

        GC

I've tested it today on another system that's running WMP9.0 and it works perfectly! Still confused, but at least I know that the process works ok.

If anybody has any ideas why it doesn't play on mine I would be very grateful?

As I might have mentioned I am relatively new to this and very much learning as I go.

              Hi anonymez,

It says wmpdvd. Doesn't mention a codec.

I'm completely p**sed off now. The motion menu is now working as it should for some unknown reason, but, the sound is no longer in the movies. Tried an original and no sound either, but I do have subtitles. WTF. Monitor going through window very soon! Yesterday I downloaded DirectX9.0c and trial versions of TMPGEnc 3.0 Express, PowerDirector 5 and Ulead VideoStudio 9.0. Do you think these downloads could have caused any of this?

              I feel like I'm drowning.....glug, bloody glug

                yes

rather than adjusting decoder merit or installing new decoders, do yourself a favour and ditch wmp. use 'media player classic' instead, should handle it flawlessly

                  @anonymez

Unstalled VideoStudio and now I've at least got my sound back in original movies. In relation to what you said concerning decoder merit - I have no idea what that means. If it's not too much trouble would you be able to quickly explain or point me in the right direction to explain why WMP won't play a dvd I've created with a motion menu, but will play it without it and also original movies with no problems. Why did you ask what was decoding the dvd in WMP and your thoughts on my reply of windvd-What does this mean? Still don't understand the mechanics of the problem, but I'm trying.

                  Cheers for now,

Could this be a codec issue? According to Codec Sniper I have 227 of them, but, GSpot is telling me 51 Video and 28 Audio. Out of these there appears to be a couple broken. I don't know if I mentioned it earlier but the DVD is for my mothers B'day on Saturday so I really need to get this resolved....HELP!

is there any reason for using wmp instead of something better? did you try media player classic?

Yes and it plays the motion menu and movie fine. As I'm sending the DVD to family I was hoping to have it work on WMP as they will probably not have Media Player Classic. What did you think about my broken codec question? As I notice one of them relates to MPEG2.

then tell them to download mpc-- its not that difficult.

wmp does not have native dvd/mpeg2 support, you have 2 options:

                          1. tell your relatives to download mpc and use it

                          2. tell them to download something like powerdvd or windvd, which will allow dvd playback in wmp

Ok. I'll follow your advice. So the following has no bearing at all then.
