          I would recommend either

          Pgdedit: http://home.tiscali.be/debie.roland/pgcedit/

          or

          VobBlanker: http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/index.htm

Both sites contain free downloads and guides.

I use DVDShrink (free) with DVD43 (free) running silently in the background to back up most DVD's. I only copy the movie file itself without menu's, warning screens and additional languages/subtitles. I can usually get the movie on a 4.7GB DVD blank with little to no "shrinking"
You can substitute AnyDVD for DVD43 on newer Sony/Columbia DVD's, but AnyDVD is only free for 21 days.
99% of ALL the movies I like enough to buy and back-up were released prior to this year, so DVDShrink/DVD43 works for me 99% of the time

The problem using DVD shrink in blanking out the extras is that with Shrink, you will still have to go thru those 3-4 sec of blanked video image wherein VOBblanker will just jump those 3 sec and to the next video.

AnyDVD is by far the easiest program to remove the FBI warnings, copyright warning, trailers, etc, at the beginning of the DVD. You just make some settings and your done. 'All' the DVDs will be stripped of those things after you make that 1 setting (Remove annoying Adverts and Trailers) in AnyDVD and it just works in the background after that. No programs to open, nothing to edit, simple. It's a decrypter.

Honestly, AnyDVD is a good program to remove those ennoyances on the fly, but I don't recomand using it to make a backup. The problem with this program is that it patches the IFOs on the fly to jump straight to the main menu or movie, but doing so, it bypasses all the normal initialization stuff. This could lead to big problems. Doesn't matter when you are watching your original DVD, because you can always disable the function that makes it fail, but if you use it for a backup, you will not be able to fix the problems anymore! If you really want to use AnyDVD for a backup, you should test it carefully before burning, and it takes much time than doing the backup the safe way!

Also, AnyDVD doesn't remove the useless logos from the VOBs. If you want to regain some place, you should use VobBlanker. PgcEdit's Jump to PGC function can be used to go straight to any part of the DVD when you insert it.

You are talking about the 'new' AnyDVD ripper that was added to the decrypting program right?
New: Added "AnyDVD Ripper". This little tool repairs defective DVDs
while copying them to your harddisk. It can be started from the menu of
the AnyDVD fox icon. It can be started as a stand alone application from
the start menu as well, so it can be used even if AnyDVD is not registered
and the trial period has expired.
It is identical to FixVTS (http://www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS/) but instead
of fixing problems "in place" it copies the files to your harddisk directly
from the source DVD. It fixes the problems while the files are copied.
Some DVDs which have severe mastering defects e.g.,
"Menace II Society" R1 (US) can now be copied with all DVD copy tools
(elby CloneDVD, DVDShrink, etc.) Many thanks to the author of FixVTS!

I use AnyDVD only as my decrypter and I was not aware that setting it to jump directly to the main movie would cause any problems. So you recommend not to set it to this? What exactly would be the problem that could be? Thanks

Also, I downloaded VobBlanker and have not used it to edit anything yet, but my understanding is that I must first use DVDDecrypter in file mode to rip the movie to hard drive, then I could open it in Blanker? Then would need Shrink to compress it? I have Shrink but I guess I might need to get DVDD to try out Blanker?

No, I'm referring to the trick used by AnyDVD (and probably also by DVD43) to jump straight to the main movie or the main menu. If you use AnyDVD in the background while the DVD is ripped by another tool (and probably also by the new AnyDVD Ripper), the new jump is hard-coded in the ripped IFOs, and therefore the original DVD behaviour cannot be restored anymore.

It is somewhat difficult to explain why the DVD might not work properly.
                        Some examples:

                        - In the initialization, the preferred language and menu configured by the user in the player are often tested by the VM commands to initialize the default language for the menus, audio and subpics. If the initialization is bypassed, the movie could start with wrong audio and/or subpic, and the menu could be displayed in a wrong language. No big deal, but it's annoying.

                        - Often, the main movie is called just before the main menu, but a pre-command jumps directly to the menu before the title is played, so you don't even notice that the main title was called.
In the main menu, instead of an explicit jump to the movie, a RSM command is issued, to return to the last played title. Now, if you use AnyDVD to jump to the main menu, bypassing everything that is played before, the main movie is not called anymore before the menu, and when the RSM command is issued, the player will crash, because it has no title to resume to. Very annoying, isn't it?

                        - In many DVDs, a gprm is initialized when a logo has been played, so that it is skipped the next time it is called, to jump to the menu or title directly. If the initialization is bypassed, the main title (or menu) will be called directly, but the logo will appear whenever the menu or title it is associated with is played again! Not sure it's what you want.

The trick used by PgcEdit is to simulate the playback of the DVD until the target is reached. During this simulation, the GPRM and SPRM changes are recorded. Then, the DVD is modified to call directly the last title that was called, and then the target PGC, requested by the user. But PgcEdit knows the values of all GPRMs and SPRMs as they were at this time, and restore them. And since the last played title was also called, there is no problem with the RSM command.

If you wanna know the guts behind what r0lZ is talking about see "A few notes" here.

What AnyDVD does is a very old trick used in IfoEdit to change the first command in the First Play PGC to the main movie/menu. It misses all the key steps in between and does not elminate that video.

And as noted, AnyDVD Ripper is what the rest of the world calls FixVTS.

Also, I haven't had any problems with AnyDVD in any of my back-ups but will keep those things in mind. I was just suggesting the 'easiest' way to remove those adverts and trailers

Great idea, blutach, to link to jeanl's guide.

MikeyBK, the method explained in that guide, and a similar method by 2COOL, were at the origin of the PgcEdit function. With PgcEdit, most of the steps of the guide are automated, and the function is also a bit more sophisticated. If you want to learn the theory, try to follow the guide on a somewhat complex DVD. The guide is somewhat outdated, since the PgcEdit function is a lot easier to implement, but it's still a good introduction. And jeanl has added some theoretical explanations, very useful to understand how it works.
