    dvd burning

I have just bought a new computer with dvd burner. The package comes with the Easy CD Creator 5 software. I kind of understand how to rip a DVD onto the hard drive but can I burn the rip on to a cd using this software? If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks.

You'll need to upgrade to 5.1 (roxio.com) to burn to dvd's.

I believe the version I have is the Plattnium version. Is this the 5.1?

"can I burn the rip on to a cd?"

If, in fact, you DO mean CD (and not DVD), the answer is no. Without further conversion and compression, it's obviously impossible to fit 4 to 9 Gigabytes of data on a 650 or 700 Megabyte CD-R...

Actually I meant a dvd. I just want to know if this software that I have is fine for burning. I have heard a lot about the Nero software that I am wondering if the easy cd creator 5 platnium version is okay or should I just get the Nero.

Adaptec should be fine. You will know after you try and burn something. Every DVD burner responds differently to different software. For example, Prassi works better for me than Adaptec 5.1 does.

Thank you very much for responding. I was a little worried about the software. I keep hearing good things about the Nero software that I was debating about whether I should go out and buy Nero. Thanks again.

i used adaptec easy cd creator for a long time for CDR and CDRW, then learned to use Nero for CDR. eventually stuck with Nero due to it's 1-ease, 2-speed, 3-reliability, 4-flexibilty.

i now have Pioneer DVR-104 burner and have had good results using Nero to burn DVD-R and DVD-RW.

i would strongly encourage you to try both, and suspect you will over time prefer Nero to Adaptec.

Thank you. I will definitely heed your advice. I have one more question. Is there an all-in-one program that allows you to convert a decrypted dvd to the mpeg format. I tried the flask software but it kept crashing my computer. Do you have any suggestions besides flask?

a couple of people have asked me questions and i am using this response as an opportunity to answer them......

first, my system is old, a pentuim P2 Windows 98 192 sdram. i have a pioneer DVR-104. to capture in mpg2 format i am using this hardware: http://www.dazzle.com/products/vidcr2.html

of course i was concerned about the issue of burning DVD-R that will play in standalone players. first thing i learned is the mpg2 file HAS to be in resolution 720 by 480 and the audio HAS to be 48Khz 224 bitrate. i made the mistake of lowering the audio bitrate once (in an attempt to cut down file size) and found that the resulting DVD-R would not play in my standalone. when i used the appropriate parameters i was successful.

i tried DVDit but don't like it. somehow it generates a set of VOB files that are much larger than your original mpg2's. i have been successful with Ulead MovieFactory and it generates VOB files that are roughly the same size as your mpg2's, so if you author an mpg2 file that is say 4 Gb, with Ulead MovieFactory the DVD folder will be that same size. With DVDit i was only able to burn from up to about 3 GB worth of mpg2.

i burned with Nero using SPECIFICALLY the directions listed at this page: http://www.highvid.com/DVD/nero1/nero01.shtml

so, i have a DVD player that i bought in 1998, a Sony DVP-S500D. i have burned 4 discs on Memorex 4.7 general purpose DVD-R's that play in that machine. however i also tried Ritek discs (cheap about $1.60 each) and they don't play in that unit. neither do DVD-RW play in that unit.

i DO think that DVD-R brand is important, and it seems, from both experience and reading what others have written on forums over the net, that the cheap DVD-R's won't work. a friend of mine authored a disc on Pioneer 4.7 general purpose DVD-R, burnt with a Pioneer DVR-A03 and it plays in my Sony but not in my Apex AD-600A.

one solution that i happily found was a DVD player that plays mp3's, mpg1, mpg2, VCD, SVCD, CDR, CDRW, DVD-R and DVD-RW. this unit cost me only $80 --> http://www.apexdigitalinc.com/html/AD-1100W.html ... the great thing about this is it will play mpg2 right off the disc (CDR, CDRW, DVDR, DVDRW) without having to be authored. as with other Apex players it also plays mp3. that seems to be an ok solution if you want to just save old video in mpg1 or mpg2 format without the hassle of authoring. it plays ALL DVD-R and DVD-RW i have burnt with the methods i mentioned above.

key points... i think.... is that the mpg2 you author HAS to be 720 by 480, audio 48 Khz 224 bitrate. the good thing about the dazzle hardware/software is that it allows you to choose any bitrate for video capture, and it shows how large a filesize will be for a given bitrate and a given amount of recording time.

the results i have had with Dazzle, capturing in mpg2, have been excellent, especially if i capture at bitrates over 5 million. you can capture in VBR and CBR up to 10 million bitrate.

with regard to smartripper and DVD2AVI, i have experimented a bit but i am not the person to ask about that method. hope my info was helpful. as for now, i will stick to using good brands like Memorex, Pioneer, Verbatim etc, and for best results use video bitrate at least 4 million when backing up commercial DVD's. i have been able to fit upwards of at least 2 to 4 hours worth on DVD-R with excellent results, using the hardware and software i mentioned.

                      DVDCutter plus Nero Burning

First use DVDCutter rip the image of the protected DVD movie to your hard disk, then use the latest version Nero Burning Rom 5.5.8.0 to burn it to your blank DVD-R, then enjoy...
You can find DVDCutter in www.******.com, get Nero Burning in the Free Download Area of www.******.com

the earlier link listed for DVDCutter seemed broken, but i found it here:

                          http://www.******.com/download/dcmsetup.zip

i tried using it but got error messages like "invalid stream" when i tried the cut and merge tool. wonder if anyone had similiar expriences and what to do about it.

Well I downloaded the dvdcutter software and the Nero okay. But when I tried to install the Nero it would let me. It kept saying some files were damaged and to re-install again. I tried it again and same thing kept happening. Have you gone through a similar situation? I have Windows XP. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. What do you think?

I studied DVDCutter and found the "key point" is the submenu "Open", maybe it's an white elephant! That is to say, it's necessary for you to use "File-->Open".
If you wanna watch movie or play AV files, you can do: File-->Play AV File, (in fact it's a call of Windows Media Player 6.4, but I find it's been enhanced with a lot of new features)
If you would like to edit the AV file, you must utilize the most important menu "Tools" and it's many submenus.
And I feel some functions cann't be implemented, perhaps it's a demo version, I guess registering it is the best way

Nero Burning includes part I and Part II, you must download both of them, and run Part I, in fact Part I is just NeroBurn.exe ( Part II is NeroBurn.r00, they actually are compressed by winrar and splitted into 2 parts), after running Part I you will get NeroBurning.zip, but it's encrypted with a password, readme.txt tell us "you'd better register DVDCutter and then you'll get more than 18 "free" software".

That's some of my individual experiences, took me 1 and a half hour
