Nero Vision burns too big

I've noticed in my copy of Nero Vision that almost everything I encode from AVI or MPG to DVD comes in oversized. I set it to DVD (4.7GB) and choose "Automatic/Fit to Disc". Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.

Any ideas on how to force it to keep it under the size?

I believe that this can happen depending on the actual bitrate of the original files. If you have Nero recode you could try outputing the encoded files to your hard drive letting the size go on the larger side and then have Recode do the compression down to a 4.7Gb size file set and burn from there.

I agree with vw56german in using Recode after vision for encoding to a target size, however, I would set the target size to 4300 to avoid burning too close to the edge of the disc.
