Menu buttons highlighted in computer but not on DVD player (WinDVD Creator 2)

Hello

I was wondering if any nice and friendly computer expert out there could help me out because I am going crazy.

I put together a nice little film of my baby with Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2 and burnt it into a DVD which played normally on my DVD player. However, since I didn't like the colour of the menus and the soundtrack I worked some more on the project a few days afterwards and produced another DVD. However, the buttons of the menu in this new one (actually, in any of the 6 DVD I have burnt in the meantime trying to amend things here and there) do not appear highlighted when selected when I use my DVD player, but they appear highlighted if I use the computer (either Intervideo 4 or WMediaPlayer). Please note that the underlying function is working - if I blindly count the "steps" I am able to navigate through the menu and all the chapters work fine, it's only that they do not get highlighted when I am hovering over them.

This is getting me crazy: if the first DVD had not worked as well, I would have thought it was a compatibility issue my DVD player, but that cannot be, because the buttons on the first one are highlighted when selected, even on the DVD player.

Is it something I did in the meantime? I did download DivX between my first DVD and the first couple of not-working-properly ones, but I uninstalled it in the meantime and the ensuing DVDs still don't have the buttons highlighted on the DVD player. After uninstalling, did I lose something I had before installing? I have also re-installed Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2 and that hasn't helped either.

As for specs: I am using WinXP, a Toshiba Satellite with a 1.6 Centrino, 512 MB Ram and burning DVD-Rs.

Again, what baffles me is that it worked once!

Hi. I think the Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2 has something wrong. you may try to use other DVD authoring.

Two ideas:

1. Play around with the CLUT (Colour Lookup Table)
2. Check to see the buttons are Forced Start.

Nightcat, you're right, it stalls in some functions, has bugs, etc., but since it has worked once, I would like to understand what's wrong now before I ditch it. thanks, anyway

I used DVD SubEdit and ascertained that the CLUT is right in the only good DVD (b-black, p-white, e-1 - green, e-2 - blue) and wrong (all four squares are "Red") in the malfunctioning DVD's. However, I cannot correct it. If I select "ignore CLUT", the four colours become the same as the good DVD but some way or the other I cannot save those definitions. It apparently saves but when I open the file again to check if everything is alright, they are all red again. If I change the colours manually, it still doesn't work (actually, there's no blue manually, just brown... - but anyway, I burnt a DVD and it still does not work). And in any case I don't want to be doing this everytime I author a DVD... I think I will just ditch WinDVD Creator 2, it's too much for me!...

Strange.

You can also change the clut with PgcEdit. Open the original in PgcEdit and find the menu PGC concerned. Double click on it. Click on copy all under subpic CLUT.

Now, without closing PgcEdit, open another instance, but this time the authored project. Go to the PGC and Paste all. Save. And check it out.

Dear Les, we're almost there...

Ok, thanks a lot, with PgcEdit I was indeed able to save the changes. Then I wrote all the files to a new DVD-R. I put it in the DVD player and I was delighted to see that the buttons were finally highlighted. Then I pressed one button (the "Chapters") and nothing. It stalls and then the DVD player says it cannot play this disc. The computer also does not recognise it as a DVD.

When I inspect the contents of the files, I see there's a Pgc_edit backup folder, which obviously a regular DVD does not have. Should I just write the other files without this folder and the DVD should work or is there any other trick to burn the DVD from the harddisk, after having edited some of the files with PgcEdit?

Woo hoo on buttons!

However, that backup folder should not be there. You didn't burn with ImgBurn or PgcEdit did you?

If you wann a burn with Ner0, exclude the backup folders. Your VTS sectors got screwed up.

@ Les - finally everything is working!

Thanks once again, mate. I used WinDVD again to "load image to burn", after removing the backup folder, and the DVD turned out perfect.

It's a bit annoying I don't understand what's happening, but at least now I have a strategy to overcome the problem: I save the movie to the disk, amend it with PgcEdit, and then burn it with WinDVD again.
