Turning off forced subtitles

I made a DVD in DVDShrink Re-Author mode. I then made the same thing in TMPGEnc to get a menu. I used PgcEdit to "import menu", and fixed some of the commands.

However, the subtitles are on from the start, and the only way to turn them off is to use the subtitle button. Is there a way to make it the reverse?

You have a SetST command somewhere Danny.

eg SetSTN Set Subtitle stream = 64, on. You need to turn it off in PgcEdit. Subtract 64 form the figure in the SetSTN.

Sadly, you will need to burn the DVD again.

It's OK, I used a RW for that purpose. Let me see if I can find what you are talking about in PgcEdit.

I couldn't find one, so I added a new one at the "first play" thing saying "setstn subtitle 0 = off" or the likes. Will that work?

Depends if it is stream 0 that is on. Post your IFOs.

There is only one stream.

Trace mode said illegal operation so I moved the set thing to the beginning of each title, that didn't error me.

Using a SetSTN command in the FP-PGC (or in the VMGM) is illegal. You have to set it in the title domain, or in the VTST menus. The way you did it in your final IFOs is correct, though, IMO, not ideal. See below...

Seems there were no SetSTN command in the original authoring. However the subpic appear anyway. This behaviour can be caused by 2 different things:

1) Your player is probably configured to automatically enable the english subpic when the audio is not in english. This is probably the problem, since the language codes for the audio tracks of titles 1 and 3 are not defined. Try to set them to english. (Select the title and use Domain -> Domain Streams Attributes.) You should not need the SetSTN commands any more.

2) The subpics in stream 0 are forced. When an individual subpic is defined as "forced start", it is displayed anyway when the subpic stream is current, even if it is off. Since there is only one subpic stream in your titles, it is not possible to select another one, and therefore subpic 0 is always current. If the subpic in stream 0 are forced, using a "SetSTN 0 off" like you did should not fix the problem, since the same stream is still current. To fix this problem, you need to change the forced start attribute of all subpics in the stream with DVDSubEdit.

Your current method should work in the first case, but not in the second one. Anyway, I recommend removing the SetSTN commands, since they are not needed if you define correctly the audio language codes, and it's annoying to have the subpic turned off automatically each time a title is played. If you want to see the subpics, you will have to re-enable them manually with the remote each time a new title is played.

It could be either of those, I do recall my first test only titles 1 and 3 had subtitles, then the second one did on my second test. I think I changed that one to English after that, but forgot the others.

I mayaswell test a burn, can't hurt. I just used DVDShrink in Re-Author, AFAIK it doesn't force subs unless you tell it to?

No, but it does automatically remap streams. Be careful of how your DVD behaves, especially audio and subpic menus.

I don't have audio and subpic menus, since I don't know how to make them and it's only audio 1 and subs on and off.

They are not like "always on", if I hit the subtitle button I can turn them off, but I would prefer them off ont he start. I changed the audio attributes to English, when I get home from school I will test.



OK very odd.

My Panasonic set-top (the one that plays like the least stuff) has the subtitles off when I added that option. Two others have them on.

I will see if the DVD Shrink one on its own had them on.

Also, the menu is only accessible from the "title menu" button. Is there a way to clone it as the "root menu" as well?

Simple.
Create a Root Menu PGC (right-click on any PGC of the VTS and select New Menu.)
Then, change the command in the new root menu to:
[30 06 00 00 00 42 00 00] 1 (JumpSS) Jump to VMGM Title menu
Repeat for all titlesets.

Given your screenshot above, your subpics are not forced.
Maybe they are still displayed because of a bad configuration of the standalone. Verify the setups of the player.

OK, well I tried remaking it with Nero Recode instead of DVD Shrink Re-Author, maybe that will help.

OK I did, and they aren't set to on or anything.

I even remuxed, same problem. It must be in the VOBs themselves.
It's not a big deal, that's what subtitle buttons are for.

However, is there a way to make a subtitle menu that says on and off? Or will that not work given this situation?
