16:9 file only Plays as 4:3

Sometimes on my cable, you see black bars and letterbox when a 4:3 source is shown on a 4:3 TV when the system is setup for 16:9 - as if the picture has been de-zoomed. But I can understand how it happens.

Your problem seems bizarre though, especially since changing channels fixes it.

Beginning to think its the Toshiba DVD recorder I have. Back to the passthrough feature. Not sure if it passes the signal straight through or if it does some prcessing particularly around the format before letting the TV haveit. never had the problem before the Tosh and when I disconnect the Tosh it never happens again...2 + 2 and all that !

Maybe even a compatablity issue between the Tosh and Sky. I know all this stuff should be some sort of industry standard in terms of signal attributes etc but I wonder.......

Looking at more up to date PVRs, at the budget end, 'cos I'll only use it for copying off my Sky+ box. The rest of the time its "back in the box"....
