Some advice to get 6gig dvd to dvd-r

Hello

I am a bit of a newbie, but I need advice to get dvd's bigger than 4.3 gig down to size without too much loss in quality.
I have read some tutorials on ripping dvd's and read lot's of posts but everyone has different ideas.
Is there a tutorial to tell you how its done?
Am I correct in thinking you need to convert the vobs into an avi and audio file to get the file size down, do you then need to convert to mpeg2 to author the dvd.

I found rempeg2 and ifoedit to be the easiest way to get a dvd down to dvd-r size.
