Problem with hardcoding subtitles

Hi everyone,

Just need a little advice! I am currently converting my DVD's to mpeg2's using decrypter followed by shrink to produce a single mpeg file for streaming video. However, certain DVDs like Pan's Labyrinth and Hero etc (obviously) are not in english, so I want to embed the subtitles into the file (thus are permanently showing).

I need them to permanently show, since windows media center will not allow me to activate subtitles from a single mpeg file.

Could anybody give me some advice as to how I will go about this? I tried using Subrip to get get the subtitles from the DVD files but I could not hardcode them into the file. I have tried searching the forum and somebody suggested naming the subtitle file exactly the same as the mpeg and putting them in the same folder. Needless to say - this didn't work!!

Any help will be appreciated.

Suppose you marked them as forced start in the VOB? Use DVDSubEdit for this.

Can be done with TMPGEnc and Vobsub.But this will mean reencoding the file and hence drop in quality.See this:

Download & install VSFilter, then it should.

Thanks for the help everyone. Blutach, I tried forcing the sub but this didnt work.
Paglamon, I tried using vobsub, however, I am using Vista, which it didnt seem to like very much!!!

I have backed up over 200 DVD's to near on 1TB of HDD space - I am just left with my non-english speaking discs now and I want planning on learning Spanish and mandarin in the next couple of weeks!!

Any other suggestions greatly welcomed - I am at a full stop!!

Guessing you installed an old version, VobSub. Get the latest version here
