Need Help Splitting Two-Episode DVD to Separate Discs

Hello everyone and thanks for inviting me to the forum. I'm a newbie at this so please bear with me if I have trouble explaining some of this stuff.

Here's the situation I'm having a problem with: I have a Ken Burns documentary DVD with multiple titlesets that's structured as follows:

Once loaded by the DVD player, the First-Play PGC jumps to Title 3= FBI Warning ---> Title 4=Warner Bros. Logo ---> Title 5=PBS Logo. At the end of Title 5, a post command is issued to call the root menu of the current titleset. From the menu the user can select either episode one or two. If I choose episode one from the menu, the menu button gives a pre command to Jump to Title 6. From there the structure is:

Title 6=List of Sponsors video segment ---> Title 1=Episode 1. What I want to do is backup each episode to its own disc, including the FBI Warning, Warner Bros. Logo and PBS Logo. The problem is that when using IFOEdit to split the DVD into two discs, the first disc has only the menu and episode 1. The second disc has all the extras such as the FBI logo, Warner Bros. Logo, etc. plus epsiode 2. I suspect this is because the extras have higher title numbers then episode 1 and therefore are all being placed on the second disc because their title numbers are higher.

My question is, what do I need to do to get the extras onto disc one and what software would be necessary to accomplish this? Do I need to completely redo the VOB files?

What I want to do is backup each episode to its own disc, including the FBI Warning, Warner Bros. Logo and PBS Logo.

One way to do what you want is use DVD Shrink in Reauthor mode, but you won't have any menus.
Shrink in Reauthor mode presents a list of all contents of the selected dvd, where you then select individual segments from the list and drag them over to a column to assemble a dvd containing only what you wish. So you'd drag over the warning, logos and the episode of choice, and have it build a dvd folder with ISO image file that can be burned to a blank disc.
If you'd like menus for scene selection of the episode, you could simply use your own dvd authoring software to create a dvd with menus, importing the contents from the dvd folder.

More experienced posters are here, and they may have a better alternative. so hang in there...

blutach, I tried your suggestion and downloaded VOBBlanker. I noticed the DVD I'm trying to backup only has one VTS which is divided into 8 segments (VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, etc.). When I selected VTS_01_*.VOB in the Titleset part of VOBBlanker (the upper part of the window), I got a list of PGC numbers in the bottom of the window. I selected only those PGC's I wanted to keep and blanked all the others. When I told VOBBlanker to process the selected files it did so fine but when I tried to play the new VOB files in PowerDVD, the DVD menu buttons didn't work. Is there some setting I need to check or uncheck in VOBBlanker? I looked over the user guides without any luck.

.m2v Files and DVD-Lab

Can anyone tell me if DVD-Lab can handle .m2v files that were stripped from VOB files? I'm using the program to re-author a 2-episode DVD-9 onto A DVD-5 by splitting the two episodes onto their own discs. Whenever I go to compile the DVD I get an error that says I should use elementary streams and if that doesn't work, to re-encode the files. I thought .m2v video and .ac3 audio were elementary streams. What's going on?

Yes, they are elementary streams but you are certainly going about it the hard way. VobBlanker can do it easily without demuxing and remuxing.

The VOB file numbers are not relevant. Just follow exactly the guide here.

You just need to plan how much you want on each disk. Plan for most of the movie on one disk, the remaining and extras on the other perhaps.

Some menu buttons will go to now blanked chapters on each disk, but that is no big deal.

Give VOBBlanker another shot, it can do exactly what you're hoping to do. Blu suggested it to me back when I first joined this forum and Blanker is now one of my favorite and most powerful tools.

What do you mean exactly by "the DVD menu buttons didn't work" ? Can you see them? Can you activate the buttons? Can you play the main movie?

Thanks for your assistance. I followed the "Splitting a DVD9 With VOBBlanker" procedure exactly the first time. The reason I thought something wasn't working is because I tested the new files that VOBBlanker had made using PowerDVD and for some reason, the PowerDVD wouldn't play the files properly. The menu showed up fine and the buttons were there, but I couldn't click on them to start the movie. I burned the files to a video DVD using Nero and then everything worked just fine. I don't know what the problem was, but I guess I just needed to go the extra step and burn the files to a DVD.
