What Bitrate to use?

I can record a TV movie with my Media Center PC then convert and encode with DVD-RB and HCenc 22. I am wondering about compression. My 2 options are to record the movie at the best setting which is 9MBPS best rate about 2.7 GB per hour or the next setting which is 6MBPS better rate about 2.1 GB per hour. My movie is 3 hours so is it better to select the best rate for the source recording and then compress more with HCenc 22 or use the lesser bitrate for the source and still compress with HCenc 22.

With BEST my movie or source would be 8.1 GB's
With BETTER my source would be 6.3 GB's since the rate is less.

Bottomline do I want my source to be the best quality possible then compress more, or go with a lesser bitrate source and compress less with HCenc 22?

I could always go with a DL DVD but I want to use DVD5.

9MBps is overkill, especially from a crummy TV capture with all its attendant crap.

6Mpbs is fine - even 4.5-5.0

But Night's advice is fine, too. I guess, it's recorded at a CBR, so DVDRB can get it to VBR which will certainly be most efficient.

So blutach, I am glad you saw this. Some of the movies I capture are less than 2 hrs so I can capture at 9 K and there is no need for compression so I go to ImgBurn. Naturally the end results aren't as good as a DVD rip that is a progressive source.

My concern was that the source would be at the high bitrate so HCenc would have to compress heavily to fit a DVD5. But if I go with 6 K rate HCenc only compresses slightly. I see the Godfather 1 and 2 on my sat dish guide. I watch on a 32" HD TV with a proscan player so the output is fine for me. Would love to capture the source as progressive.

My Motirola Sat receiver gives me options of 000 which means the video will be displayed as it is broadcasted. I also can select 480 i, 480P 720P, 1080i. I leave it on the 000 setting so I get it the way it is broadcast. With a HD picture I can select 480 i and capture the movie in full screen (my HD TV is 4:3) to the Media center. If I changed my sat reciever to 480P would my media center record it as progressive?

So what if it has to compress heavily? It is not a transcoder. It just takes a source and runs it thru. But 9 Mbps is just way too high IMHO.

But yes, 6 Mbps is fine. Have a look at most DVD Videos - they are about 5 Mbps VBR.

thanks blutach, I see after I demux then author the DVD files my bitrate decreases from 9000 so DVD-RB and HCenc really arent getting a 9 K source.

what are your thoughts on this:

Do you think it would capture as progressive if I change the settings in the sat rec to 480P TV ??

A progressive source is nicer than an interlaced one I believe.
