How to get better quality?

Howdy, I recently tried to backup some DVDs, and things went smoothly and work except for the fact the shows are pixellated and a little jumpy in parts. I know this is because I compressed the files, but is there a fix to this?

Is it possible to split the files up over multiple CDs to get less compression? I would really like to get a good DvD for this!

Use better quality media (Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim) and better quality encoders - eg DVD Rebuilder (there is a free edition using HCEnc). Other transcoding solutions include Ner0 Recode (in 2 pass mode) to improve qualty.

Alternatively, you could split the disks. Possibly, the easiest is with VobBlanker - guide on site.

What would you recommend for the best quality? Splitting it up into 2 discs or using the software you mentioned on one disc?

The file is 7 Gigs.

Well, you can't get better than the original quality, can you? So, splitting preserve quality but at the expense of having to change the DVD half way through. You can also put it on a DL disc but they are more expensive than DVD5s.

Most times, trancoding solutions can produce excellent output, though, especially after you have stripped unwanted languages and blanked unwanted extras. You really need to do it and see for yourself what is acceptable.

I tried to use VobBlanker to split up my discs, and I got the file to the right size to fit on one disc, but whenever I select my Blank DVD (Drive E) as the Output Folder and select process, I get an Error telling me to 'Check output Folder!'

Do you know what I'm doing wrong?

Yes, you can't write from VobBlanker to an optical drive. Make it a hard drive and then use ImgBurn to write to blank disc.
