Subtitle backgroud around characters only

I'm trying to create subtitles with a black background around the characters only for legibility, instead of filling the whole subtitle box, since it blocks out a significant part of the movie view. I can't seem to do it with Subtitle Creator. I can get the desired effect when viewing with VLC player using an external srt file, but I'm trying to make a DVD so this doesn't help me. Do different subtitle formats have this ability, or are they all basically the same? Will I have to burn them into the movie? It would be nice to be able to turn them off if needed.

Use DVDSubEdit. You can change the subtitle CLUT colours and transparency and see the effect on screen.

All subtitles are 2 bit encoded streams. Normally, you can mux them in with audio and video, but DVDSE works on VOBs in place.

Also, if you got this effect, it's probably because you have not carefully selected the color indexes and transparency values in Subtitle Creator. (You should load the IFOs of the original DVD or of a DVD created by the same authoring program in SC.)

Normally, the rectangular background should be fully transparent. Anyway, you can easily modify its transparency with DVDSubEdit, as blutach suggested.

That did the trick- I guess I didn't realized you had to manually select the opacity of the background and hadn't noticed it was set to full transparent. Thanks both of you.
