Is buying a DVD-RW worth it?

I would be interesting in doing DVD to DVD-R backups for myself, but I'm trying to warrant the $300. Is this going to go obsolete next week? Also, what's going on with the standards? I lost track of all of it. What's going on with DVD-RAM and DVD-ROM and DVD-R.

Also, will DVD-R backups play normally in DVD players and PS2s? I use my PS2 to play movies.

I'm new to all this, so bare with me.

    Thanks guys.

Don't forget to throw DVD+R into the equation as well.

I would wait until prices have gone down some more. There is nothing worse than spending your hard-earned dollars, only to find that the price of your new hardware has plummeted the following month(s). The media are still relatively expensive too.

If your planning on waiting for something better...you'll be waiting forever.

          Technology is always evolving.

You might as well enjoy what's available now.

$300??...I guess that's US dollars, which would equal approximately $530 Australian...You should think yourself lucky, you can't buy a DVD burner for less than $900 here.
