flexz - i'm not that big on forums, so i though i'd Pm you instead. i buy dvd's in bulk also and i've been burning them at 4x speed (they are all 1x dvd's bought in 50 packs from pcclub.com). i'm using a pioneer a05 with the latest hacked firmware 1.30 that lets you burn lots of brands of 1x dvds at 2x. i use a pentium 4 2.4ghz with 512 mb ram running winxp and lots of harddrive space. the software i use to backup dvd's is: dvddecrypter(3.160) - dvd2one(1.13)- and nero (5.5917).

    very basic process:
    1. file rip the entire movie using dvddecrypter.
    2. compress ripped movie using dvd2one
    3. launch nero and choose dvd video
    4. add movie files into video_ts folder
    5. insert a 4x disk into burner
    6. click file - write cd - and select "4x" for write speed (do not hit the "write" button yet)
    tricky part:
    7. using a paper clip manually eject the 4x dvd (it may still be spinning)
    8. insert a 1x dvd and manually push in the tray (do not push the drive button to close the tray)
    9. click on "write" in nero. it should burn at 4x (15 minutes larer it's done.

i got a "laser calibration error" when inserting a ritek 03(1x) disk and using princo (1x) discs. the only brand i use says "LD" is the manufacturer (using dvddecrypter) again i get them from pcclub.com

ps. i'm not sure how many times doing this will ruin the drive but i;ve successfully done this over 25 times with no coasters. the wonerful thing is... when you get the calibration error it doesn't ruin the disc an you can still use it. good luck.

Well, when burning at 4x with a 1x rated DVDR is not a good idea. Why? Because some DVD Players won't be able to read this disc due to files are being written so fast. But if you only want to play these Discs on your home player, then go for it.

I've burned some of mine at 2x with a 1x rated and one of my DVD Player won't even play it right. WHY? I just explained that
