Sony writer problems

While writing to DVD-R at 2 speed(using Sony DMR47A media) I've been turning out coasters with both CloneDVD and Nero. I'm using a Sony DW-U14A as secondary master with no slave drive under Windows XP SP1. The firmware is version 1.0b - there doesn't seem to be an update to version 1.0c, unlike for the retail drive. All I can find is Sony's suggestion to try changing the IDE controller between DMA and PIO mode, which I haven't tried yet.

Any ideas?

Until you've resolved your problem, I'd strongly suggest that you use R/W DVDs...
