NewB: Followed directions, cannot play disc, help

    Hi,

Trying to make a backup of a movie disc but my Sony DVP-S530D DVD Player gives me "Cannot play disc". I'm new to this but I'm not trying to do anything complicated, I think, so hopefully someone can help me out. I've read some other posts and combed through most of the guides but I end up having more questions than answers by doing so..

    Here's what I've done:
    1. Used DVD Decrypter w/ Stream Processing on to rip the movie to my HD.
    2. Loaded the VIDEO_TS.IFO into IFO Edit and used "DVD Play" to play the menu and then the movie. It told me that VTS_01 and VTS_03 title sets were used. (followed an idiots guide)
    3. Copied the VIDEO_TS, VTS_01, and VTS_03 files (.IFO, .BUP, .VOB) to another folder. (according to a tutorial)
    3. Checked copied files directory with IFO Edit and movie plays w/menu as expected.
    4. Used DVD Shrink to make sure all the files would fit on one disc.
    5. Created a VIDEO_TS folder for the whole thing and burned it using Nero (according to a guide)

    Result:
Plays on computer fine. Sony DVP-S530D standalone player says "Cannot play disc"

    Questions about my steps:
    1. When I click "DVD Play" in IFO Edit I get a warning that says "The video decorder doesn't produce closed caption data". I get this warning with both the entire decrypted movie and with the copied files set. Would this cause the problem I'm seeing? How do I correct it if so?

    2. There's a lot of information here about decoding the IFO files, etc., but I don't think I need more than what I'm doing. Am I missing a step?

    Thanks,
    Curt

"Used DVD Decrypter w/ Stream Processing on to rip the movie to my HD."

    1) Use DVD Decrypter in "FILE" mode (from the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "ALL files", NOT "movie files")

    2) If the resultant "package" of files copied to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use (freeware) DVDShrink or (commercial) DVD2One, DVD95Copy, or similar to compress

Sorry, I left that detail out. I did rip the entire DVD using decrypter and then only copied over the files that IFO Info said I needed. The files are listed in the first post.

My intention in this is to get the movie and the working menu onto a DVD-R. Following the tutorials and reading how this is done has still left me stumped. All the files a need will fit onto one DVD-R without compression but copying them all over doesn't seem to do the trick.

      Any other suggestions?

      Curt

"It told me that VTS_01 and VTS_03 title sets were used."

If, in fact, you had a COMPLETE set of files copied from the original DVD, it would have to include a set of .IFO, .BUP, and .VOBs starting with "VTS_02" - since you also had a set of "VTS_03" files (you can't skip a number).

"only copied over the files that IFO Info said I needed"

Why don't you post a SPECIFIC list of ALL of the files (and their sizes) that were created by DVD Decrypter?

I ask this because, if you've used DVD Decrypter properly, ALL produced files would be required...

Ok, here's some more information. DVD decrypter gave me all the files from the entire DVD. I only wanted to put the menu and the movie on the DVD-R and leave the extras off. That's why, according to IFO Edit's tutorial, I only put on the VIDEO_TS files, the VTS_01 set, and the VTS_03 set onto the DVD-R.

Here is the list of files that DVD Decrypter created (sorry for the crappy paste, windows cmd):
          22,528 VIDEO_TS.BUP
          22,528 VIDEO_TS.IFO
          778,240 VIDEO_TS.VOB
          18,432 VTS_01_0.BUP
          18,432 VTS_01_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_01_0.VOB
          10,240 VTS_01_1.VOB
          18,432 VTS_02_0.BUP
          18,432 VTS_02_0.IFO

          231,424 VTS_11_0.VOB
          84,449,280 VTS_11_1.VOB

Here is the list of files I burned to the first DVD from the IFO Edit tutorial. I just wanted the menu and the movie so IFO Edit said I only needed VTS_01, VTS_03, and the VIDEO_TS files (don't have the file sizes, deleted the folder, sorry):
          VIDEO_TS.BUP
          VIDEO_TS.IFO
          VIDEO_TS.VOB
          VTS_01_0.BUP
          VTS_01_0.IFO
          VTS_01_0.VOB
          VTS_03_0.BUP
          VTS_03_0.IFO
          VTS_03_0.VOB
          VTS_03_1.VOB
          VTS_03_2.VOB
          VTS_03_3.VOB
          VTS_03_4.VOB

I figured that was all I needed since that was the menu and the main movie.

I now have followed the tutorial on splitting a disc but just using the contents of the first disc. That disc contains the menu and the movie. This had the same effect though. The DVD player still won't play it. I used IFOEdit to get the movie VOBs and then I copied in all the files needed that IFOEdit didn't. Here's the list of files from that one (IFO Edit basically just reworked the VTS_03 file):
          22,528 VIDEO_TS.BUP
          22,528 VIDEO_TS.IFO
          778,240 VIDEO_TS.VOB
          18,432 VTS_01_0.BUP
          18,432 VTS_01_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_01_0.VOB
          18,432 VTS_02_0.BUP
          18,432 VTS_02_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_02_0.VOB
          83,968 VTS_03_0.BUP
          83,968 VTS_03_0.IFO
          261,791,744 VTS_03_0.VOB
          1,073,467,392 VTS_03_1.VOB
          1,073,522,688 VTS_03_2.VOB
          1,073,203,200 VTS_03_3.VOB
          881,750,016 VTS_03_4.VOB
          32,768 VTS_04_0.BUP
          32,768 VTS_04_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_04_0.VOB
          20,480 VTS_05_0.BUP
          20,480 VTS_05_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_05_0.VOB
          26,624 VTS_06_0.BUP
          26,624 VTS_06_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_06_0.VOB
          20,480 VTS_07_0.BUP
          20,480 VTS_07_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_07_0.VOB
          24,576 VTS_08_0.BUP
          24,576 VTS_08_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_08_0.VOB
          18,432 VTS_09_0.BUP
          18,432 VTS_09_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_09_0.VOB
          18,432 VTS_10_0.BUP
          18,432 VTS_10_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_10_0.VOB
          18,432 VTS_11_0.BUP
          18,432 VTS_11_0.IFO
          231,424 VTS_11_0.VOB

That's the entire dvd set of files except for the actual vobs with the video in them for the sets other than 01 and 03. I DID NOT copy over any of the files that IFO Edit created for me.

This however still does not play but does play on the PC just fine.

Hopefully the new info will help someone help me solve this.

Thanks for the help so far.

You appear to have properly used DVD Decrypter to copy ALL files.

As I mentioned earlier, you would have to copy ALL files into the "VIDEO_TS" folder of the to-be-burned DVD in order to create a playable DVD.

However, the maximum combined filesize you can burn to a DVD is 4.37Gb (approximately 4,500Mb).

If you'd like to make your life a LOT easier, simply use DVD Shrink to read in the files from your hard drive - and then "easy as pie" compress as needed (to get under 4.37Gb total size) - and you'll be ready for burning in a matter of minutes.

            Then, for future DVDs, you can simply use DVD Shrink to rip the files DIRECTLY from the DVD, as well as compress as may be necessary ;>}

Thanks for letting me know I have ripped all the files right but to be honest that's pretty trivial since the tool does it for you.

I don't want to compress the whole thing onto one disc. I would have to compress it a lot to the point of it looking like crap even if I removed the extra sound tracks and what not. Compressing the whole thing to one disc is easy. DVD XCopy Express will do it with one click and you're done.

What I want it to just have the menu and the movie on one disk. I'll put the menu and the extras on another. No compression loss, no stripping stuff out to ease the compression, just two disks and everything in uncompressed format.

I followed the tutorial on this site which I thought was really good.
digital, digest, dvd, divx, dvdr, dvd+r, dvd-r, rip, copy, ripping, convert, backup, back, up, shrink, xvid, software, download, news, guide, article

I thought I had executed this correctly to achieve the end result but I'm still sturggling with it. I noticed other people have had issues with one of the steps using IFOEdit but I've checked those too and haven't found where I made a mistake.

If anyone is familiar with tutorial and might no any other pitfalls that they want to share I would love to hear them.

              Thanks,
              Curt
