ND-1300a won't recognize dvd movies?

I just bought an NEC ND-1300a. I can burn DVD-R data with nero but whenever I put a dvd movie into the drive it won't recognize them. It keeps telling me to insert media. I just want to be able to play DVD's with the drive. I am using FW ver 1.07 I also tried 1.08 and no dice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
