I assume you want to backup a DVD. If so, there are two vital programs you should have have, which are:

    1. DVD Decrypter–for ripping and removing CSS, Macrovision, RCE protection and burning the disk also.

    2. DVD Shrink–for backing up the DVD–also for removing encrypted protection–and compressing a DVD so that it will fit an a single DVD (r, rw) 4.7 gig disk.

Do a google search to find the best download links for these programs. They are both free.

What about hardware? I have a cd burner on my system now. How do I know if it will also burn DVDs?

Also, I failed to mention regarding hardware, you need a decent DVD burner (I assume you already have a fairly state-of-the-art computer to begin with)

The following link will give you some idea of the possibilities:

          sorry,

List your rig specifications, such as : processor type and speed (whether Mhz or Ghz), hard disc drives capacity Gig's and speed (rpm's), memory chips how much Ram mb's and do you have a dvd-rom also on your system with the cd burner?

You will need @ least a dvd burner (though not a dvd-rom) as a minimum "hardware" requirement.

Also, do you have a standalone (table top) dvd player? If so, what brand name and model is it and does it play DVD-R (dvd movie back-ups). Or do you have a PS2/XBox you will play the dvd movies with?

It is a good idea to be a little "long-winded" about the specifications in a post as sometimes a little more info. gets a simple solution very quick.

You wil not need to buy any software as there are easy to use dvd back-up softwares which are freewares (free). So, save your money and buy more movies and get good quality dvd movie back-ups.

          So, overwhelm us with spec.'s.
          Rig :

Sorry for the short posts. I purchased a burner this weekend so I'm good to go there. What do you recommend for software?

What model burner did you purchase, and also, was it bundled with particular software?

You really need to post the spec.'s (including the burner you lately purchased, as "Compatible dvd movie back-ups is a formula."). Do you know if your standalone dvd player will play the type of dvd's your burner will burn.

You see, without the right burner, you may have to return the burner for another burner that will burn the kind of dvd's that your player will play. Not all of the burners being sold are multi format.

Really, very good video quality dvd movie back-ups is a simple thing, if the necessary components are put together somewhat correctly. If you know much about computers, then you know some software works better with some O.S.'s than with others, so be forthcoming with the spec.'s so we can help you with a modicum of effort and more quickly.

The dvd movie back-up software you will need are at least the following : DVDShrink versions 3.0 Beta 5, and v. 3.1.5 Beta 4 (Arno has a link amongst the threads if you have a problem finding such), it is also a good idea to also have v. 2.3. , DVDDecrypter v. 3.1.9.0 and IMG Tools Classic v. 0.91.1 from Coujo,de (for erasing RW discs, also download IMG Tools v. 1.1.1, as this v. has a Partial Erase feature).

You could also download (for problematical dvd movies (hard to rip) SmartRipper v. 2.41 and vstrip). Vstrip is not so easy to use. If you use SmartRipper, make sure you click the files button and put a check to the left of every vob, etc. listed.

Some persons can "marathon" learn (posting on the forum) to back-up 99% of all dvd movies in as little as 2 days and others learn to do so usually within a week. It is better to do so with the freewares as you save money and can show your friends also.

Using "Re-author" mode in DVD Shrink, you can backup the main movie title with the extras, but you will loose the functionality of the menus. If you want to "Retain" the menu functionality, use a program called "DVD Stripper".

For very easy to understand guides to use DVDShrink, visit : dvdshrink.info. You can now automatically burn with dvddecrypter by selecting the click box in shrink and selecting file type in Target Device as ISO File. That's DVDDecrypter v. 3.2.0.0 and DVDShrink v. 3.1.7 Beta 5 (use this version).

                      It's all free, now !
