burner corrupting source disc when using dvd shrink?

I used a DVD shrink / Nero combination to burn a movie last night. Now the source disc won't play and has little flecs all over the surface of it.

I must admit that I'm new to backing up DVDs. Is this normal? I've tried to play the original DVD in 3 different players. Do you think my burner corrupted the source disc during the rip? Or did something else happen?

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

More info needed, but it sure sounds like your burner-burned your source disc by mistake.

Is it possible you put the source disc in the burner instead of a blank disc??? Obviously a burner shoudn't burn a source disc (glitch in your matrix?).

    Many other possibilities-

Do you use your burner to read/shrink the source disc?,and then replace the source disc with a blank after it's shrinked for Nero burning?

Depending on damage to the source disc-there are devices that will remove scratches using supplied compounds-I bought one from Shop 4 Tech, and it works pretty good-but your "flecks" may be too deep.

    Good Luck

No, this is the strange thing. The burn completed just fine. I can watch the burned disc. However, I can't even get to the title menu on the original disc.

I have been using dvd shrink to first burn to the HD and then I open the files off of the HD and burn to a disk.

Yes, this is what I've been doing. I guess my question is, can ripping cause these problems? Is it maybe some form of copyright protection?

Sounds more like an error on your hardware/burner side-but i'm guessing with limited experience.

I don't rip from the net, and that begs the question-is your source disc a rip?

Regardless I don't believe it's a copy protection thang, maybe others can help.

Have seena couple reports of "mold-like" spots on discs that were left in a hot drive overnight. Heat is the only thing that can ruin a disc inside a drive, and it's physically impossible for a burner to do anything but read a pressed disc.

"Now the source disc won't play and has little flecs all over the surface of it."

            1) Is your "source disc" a COMMERCIAL (pressed) DVD or a burned DVD?

            2) Have you tried to carefully blow the flecks off?

            3) Has this happened with any other "source discs"?

            4) Have you cleaned the innards of your computer?

              Yes, it's a commercial disk.

Yes, and I've tried to clean in with disc-cleaner.

I've only had the burner for about a week and this is my sixth burn. It's the first time it's happened.

It's a new burner, I'm not sure why that would matter.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm anxious to get to the bottom of this.

Is it an internal or external burner? What make and model?

Wasn't talking about "cleaning" the disc, but rather repairing the disc (which uses a buffing compound to remove scratches),and hopefully your fleck's.

Although if this is going to happen again you obviously don't want to have to repair every disc.

The "flecks" came from somewhere within your system...
