    USB2 vs Firewire

I have an 8x LG 4082B connected thru external USB 2 enclosure. It seems to take about 16 minutes or more to record movie at 8X using cyberlink Power Producer 2 Gold. Would Firewire be noticeably faster?. Some info follows:

    Media code/Manufacturer ID PRODISC R03
    Media Product Revision Number 03h
    Volume Name THESTRANGER
    Application id
    Implementation id Spruce Technologies
    Recording Date/Time (mm/dd/yyyy) 9/10/2002 12:04:27
    Format Capacity 3.50GB(3.76GB)
    Book Type DVD+R
    Media Type DVD+R
Media Id Code Speed 8.0x 11080KBps
    Data area starting sector 30000h
    Data area end sector 1C019Fh

Some people report problems burning at high speed on USB 2 . After switching to firewire all is well.

Thanks for the reply. I may buy an enclosure with firewire and give it a try. I'll post the results if I do..

Not too experienced at burning DVD+r's but my LG 4X Dual format burns 4.4G in about 13 mins through a USB 2 connection. I use firewire for my DV cam input but I believe it is approx 88mbs slower than USB:2.

So no your burner is not burning at 8X..... 3.5 Gb would take me about 9 mins to burn through my USB 2.0 connected LG 4X burner.

Thanks for info. What is especially strange is that my brother has same drive, LG 4082B, and he has slow record times with Firewire external enclosure. Both of us seem to be recording at 4X instead of 8X with either USB2 or firewire enclosures no matter what media we use. But when I put drive internally, I burn at 8X fine.

Sounds like you know the answer then.

I run a small bus converting existing home videos onto DVD's. The rendering takes long enough. If I could burn the final product in 7 1/2 mins rather than 15, or 28 as I have been doing prior to yesterday, I would be a happy man.

            Good luck.

I read this recently somewhere (can't remember where.....).

"Although on paper USB 2.0 has a higher speed than Firewire - 480 over 400Kb/s. The USB 2.0 interface requires some CPU overhead, whereas the Firewire interface does not. In essence, the Firewire interface can provide faster, sustained data rates than USB 2.0".

I have an external HDD with both USB 2.0 and Firewire. I have tried both interfaces, and can honestly say I cannot see any difference in speed when copying .ISO files from my internal to external HDD.

              Hope this helps.
