    free vob encoder?

    hello.
i have a computer that came with a dvd burner installed as well as with nero software. the problem is the burning software does not have a built in converter for video files and so they expect regular dumb people to be able to make vob, ifo, or bup files to put on the dvd. so anyways. my problem is that rather than pay $70 for some plugin that should have just came with the original software, im hoping that there is some free vob/ifo/bup encoder out there. its pretty dumb, i can easily pirate dvds and illegally copy them, but I cant put regular legal video files from my hard drive onto a dvd as dvd video.

hopefully someone knows of an encoder that can encode my movies into the damn dvd video format
    thx for any help

"i can easily pirate dvds and illegally copy them"

That's not going to get you very much cooperation at these forums...

"I cant put regular legal video files from my hard drive onto a dvd as dvd video."

One set of procedures (other posters may/probably will suggest alternative methods) would be:

    1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI (DivX-compressed or otherwise), or non-compliant MPEG, to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

    2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)

**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress

If your O/S is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode
(As an alternative to "TMPGEnc DVD Author", you could use "DVDLab")

    Let us know of your success ;>}

For a free alternative to those setarip listed, you can use the freeware version of TMPGEnc (not TMPGEnc DVD Author.) to convert the files to DVD Compliant MPEG. Then author with IFOEdit.

Look around for some guides on how to do this. It's my guess that after 30 days of TMPGEnc you would be limited to 352x240 resolution though, because that's the only legal resolution for MPEG-1 DVDs (can only use MPEG-2 for 30 days w/ TMPGEnc.)

It's never a good idea to put the word illegally in your post... might want to edit that part out...

ok, ill check up on that ifoedit, sounds like it will do what i need. and about the illegal part, i was just trying to illustrate the stupidity of the nero program that came with the computer. it has a dvd copy mode, and it has a burn mode that only burns vob files so if i wanted to copy a dvd directly id have no problem. but as far as legal uses of the software, aka burning home movies from wmv/avi/mpg to a dvd it had no option or program that allowed you to do it. im a huge computer geek and it still took me some time to get to a menu informing me that i would need to purchase a $70 plugin from Nero in order to burn regular movie files. i dont know how regular stupid computer illiterate people (no offense) would have figured out how to burn home movies.
its just funny that the perfectly legal uses of a dvd burner are so much more complicated than the illegal uses. i honestly expected nero to have a better program, since their cd burning software automatically converts audio files to cd format, and video files to vcd format, so i dont understand why their dvd burning software doesnt automatically convert video to dvd video files.

oh well, i think ive written enough. ill see how ifo edit works out
