Lost DVD & CD-R.. need desperate help

I lost my DVD & CDR.... I upgraded from Millenium to XP, my DVD & CD-R then started having problems. I erased uper and lower files (as recomended by someone) and deleted cd-r drive and tried "add hardware" wizard.. but could not locate cd-r. So now, I have purchased a MicroAdvantage DVD+-RW (8dvdrw-b13) and removed the Cd-r, but my system can't find new hardware. I'm completely lost. Any help? I heard it had to do with Easy CD Creator 4 (which I uninstalled with no succes) and also with the register files? Please Help... I haven't been able to even read a cd since then. Thanks

The problem is upgraded fro millenium to XP, on perhaps a unsuitable machine.

Have you tried formating your hard-drive and starting again from scratch?
