    Ques: DVD+R vs DVD-R

I am new to this whole DVD rippin and burnin. What is the difference in the two different media's?

I ask since my wife just bought me a spindle of TDK 4x DVD+R since they were on sale at CompUSA. When I looked on various forums all i saw were DVD-R releases and help info.

Is the fact that I have DVD+R's going to affect my ability to rip, burn and successfully play DVD copies?

Any info and guidance would be appreciated! Thanks in advance for any/all help!!

"What is the difference in the two different media's?"

Nothing as far as distinguishing a qualitative difference is concerned. (+R) media's capacity for holding more data is slightly greater than (-R) media.

I'd have to disagree with that. There is something slightly different with the coding. Besides the size difference, I THINK the +R were designed to be more efficient at multiple writes where the -R were designed for maximum compatibility. Some players are DEFINITELY more compatible with one or the other and it's usually the -R.

I agree Phytrax the crucial difference between the two is really a compatibility with standalone DVD players.

The -R version are by far the most compatible with not just the Standalone but everything else that will play them.

The rest ladies and germes is as they say is history.

The Ritek -R G-04 dark purple die coating is a great aid to that compatibility. These Burn at a x4 speed (dependant on the drive) and are very reliable.

Nonetheless if you have a +/- drive that is a bonus. You never know when you might need it. Besides the price difference is hardly an issue so why not have both formats?

Agree Fil I use both + and - .Ive only come across two players that didn't recognise a + disc and one wouldn't recognise + or -
          But Ive never come across a player that doesn't recognise a + disc with a bitseting of DVD-ROM.They also rip twice the speed of + or - .I burn Ritek GO5 4x @ 8x and Richo JPNR01 4X @8X both excellent disc's.

            True

I was thinking rather that modern DVD players will play any format under the sun, but however if they'r a little older (not everybodys friends or family are hi-techies like us) will have a DVD player like that.

But that bitsetting of DVD-ROM is simply having players recognising the + media as essentialy a - media, is it not? (I'm not an expert on that, or anything else for a fact)

Ritek G-05 x4 @ x8? I would like to ask you about those, namely is the dye a different color? and will it play anywhere?

I thought that these G-05 support a maximum burn speed of x8
            anyway.

            Good one anyway

A friend of mine has a new cheapo Schneider player that wont play DVD+R. Another, I do have more than one LOL has an old cant remember the make that will only play DVD+R set to DVD-ROM its different than DVD-R it kids the player and it sees it as a pressed DVD.The G05's I have are Ridisc 4x and Ritek tango 4x.Also have Ritek tango G04 identical to look at.They all play well no probs.

Most bought at a local shop that specialise in disc's, drives and ink.
Real dump of a shop but very good prices and the guys that work there are real knowledgeable not like the local PCW****
                  Sometimes Bigpockets on line.
BTW if the GO5,s I have are rated as 4x are the GO5,s rated @ 8x true 8x media? makes you think.

Doesnt make me think but rather it makes me wonder.

As soon as the DVD DL drives support +/- DL disk I'm getting one.

I dont particularly care about the speed as long as it's minimum x4 burn but on a DL drive this will be x8 minimum..

These forums are great, even just meaning to hep people I always get to learn twice as much as I put out. And then it's a vicious circle.

No, I looked hi and low but no (bummer)

There are however double sided Ritek G-04 9.4GB -R media

There is something about the + media that puts me off anyway.

I haven't heard of this "bitsetting" option to make +R look like -R. How does that work? and how do you enable it?

Depends on whether your drive supports bitseting.Set it with Dvdinfopro.DVD+R change to DVD-ROM.

Can you do this on an already burnt DVD+R?
