new to making backup copies

I am new to the dvd rip and burn business. I am interested in making backup copies of my dvd for use on vacations etc. what programs and what exactly do I do to rip a dvd and burn it back onto a blank dvd so that it can be played on a regular dvd player?

copy the DVD onto your HD with smart ripper or DVD decrypter then use DVD shrink to make those DVD-9 files into DVD-5 then when all is done burn with Nero
