A little help with burning using NERO 6

Hey guys n gals.. little new to dvd burning. I have had this problem occur more times than not so its starting to make me really frustrated.

While using DVD Shrink I have backed up a few movies onto my HD... now when trying to burn using Nero 6 I keep getting the following error...

    "Focus or Tracking error"...

This error has happened with at least 3 or 4 movies I've tried burning. Only one has burned successfully... all others fail, which keep in mind trashes the DVD blank media.

    Any help? please?...

I thank you all very much in advance!!

The error code indicates hardware related problems. Could be that your burner don't like your brand of discs.

You could try to see if there is a firmware update for your burner.

Also make sure you have the latest updates of Nero installed.

Firmware makes the unit work. Updateing firmware makes the unit work better, If you but a drive, after a few weeks, the developers may have found bugs that prevent the unit working 100% so they release a new firmware. The above forum is for people who hack and alter firmware, things like making the drive burn faster than the manufacturers want it to, and making it region free.

If you have Nero 6 on your PC, you could just use DVDShrink to rip and burn your DVD for you.

You could post the log file from Nero. You find that one and a lot of the other burns in this location:

              C:\Program\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

              What burner do you have?

I am using the burner that came with my Sony VAIO Laptop. It is a MATSH!TA UJ-820D. It is supposed to be a DVD+/- R/RW drive. I've been trying to burn using Memorex DVD+R discs and have tried with 1 Fuji DVD-R and have only successfully burned like 2 out of 10+ tries.

Here are a couple of log files as you asked for... if you need the txt file, let me know, i'll email it to ya.

Thanks greatly for all your help! This laptop is brand new, didnt think i'd have trouble this early.

Have you been putting labels on these failed discs before trying to burn?

The logfile only tells me that your burner don't like your brand of discs.

The Memorex discs I would stop using. One of the oldest and in my view most regarded members of this forum has put this on his webpage: Memorex (worse media ever created). Source: http://forum.mrbass.org/viewtopic.php?t=56

But the Fuji is good media and can't you burn with those - you have real problems.

Found this in a link in the bottom of this post:

"It seems that this drive will only recognize 4x for very high quality DVD-R. Some Ritek and Pansonic brand DVD-R will be recongnzie at 4x."

According to this page the burner is what the name tells you - ****.

There are no new firmware and there don't seem to be released one ever. Hate to say this but I think the only real solutions are these:
                      1. Try with some highbranded discs
                      2. If that don't work - replace the burner with another brand of burner. Hard but true. I hate when they release burners and then don't take care of releasing new firmware for the latest burning media.

                        No Ive never done that.

I will try to go out and buy like a 5 pack of Fuji Media and try that. Is there any other brand media you recommend me using? I guess i'll have to give away my 50 pack spindle away to a friend who uses memorex with no problems ever.

                        just my luck...

                        Thanks again in advance!

Just to give you guys/gals an update....

I was able to pick up a 25pack spindle of DVD-R at Best Buy for $2 (manager hooked it up)

the DVD-R's are working perfect. My DVD burner is a DVD+/- but for some reason the DVD+R discs error.

Anyway, I am happy with the performance with the DVD-Rs are giving me. The brand of the DVD-R discs i bought is DYNEX. I also just bought another 25 pack of fuji this time. Hope they work as well.

                            Thanks for everyone's continuing support!
