Nero burns CDs but not DVDs

Nero burns CDs but not DVDs. First noticed that it wouldn't with DVD Shrink. Tried Nero's 6.3.1.25 patch, no go. Removed Service Pack 2, no go. Reinstalled Nero, no go.

    Goes a bit like this...

When using the one-click back-up mode in Shrink, that's what it does, writes to cache but not to the DVD.

With just writing to the DVD using Nero outright, as soon as I hit "finished" when using the "add files", it fails to work then. Makes a few noises of the drive spinning, spits out the DVD, takes it back in, spins a few times more. Spits it out & THEN comes up with the "burn" screen & button. Closing the tray once more, it writes to the cache successfully (see error report below), spits out the tray, closes it & then ends with an error message this time, print out of which is below.

Thanks in advance for any & all help.

      "Finalize CD : FALSE
      Multisession : TRUE
      Multisession type: : Start multisession"

If you're burning in a DVD mode (presumably "DVD-Video"), you want to UNcheck "multisession"...

        It's a Pikaone DVD Dual

www.pikaone.com gives a May 2004 update for the firmware to 0058

www.drvupdate gives you a firmware update tool.

The user interface is the same, but neither work, the error message reading when trying to update is

        It's only for
        (1) DVDRW USB1008UI .
        (2) DVDRW IDE1008 .
        Check Sum : 6058
        Please wait a minute.....
        Execute command errorA!! 5/20/ 0
        Flashing is incorrect!!

Whatever that means, the firmware is still 0052

        So, still no luck.

Re the multisessioning, with DVD Shrink not working, I was trying to burn some random data rather than back up a DVD. Artisanburner worked fine for that (took it off straight away though once I established that my burner still burnt DVDs, it's loaded with spy & adware), just Nero wouldn't when I tried without the multisessioning (just this error message is besides that, typical)

                Windows.

The Liveupdate tool which Pikaone suggests people use gives the same message as well

Could try to flash it in DOS. Create a DOS floppy and run it from there.

There is not much other info on your driver and firmware to find. If your burner can't be flashed there must be something wrong. Perhaphs you should contact Pikaone directly.

                    hi there guys

                    DVD high compatibility mode: No
Chose this option as yes... Once You try that could you also if it fails, another disk...

You may also update the drivers to you IDE controller.

Where it says ATAPI, detected:? it should show ATAPI instead of ?

Are you trying to burn an Iso image to a DVD not to burn an image to the hard drive right? look also at attachement for settings on i.e. nero express.

On you Nero express Menu it should Show as in Example B (except your drive not mine) if your burning on DVD (circled RED)

There maybe more but take this in steps ok?

Hmm, you have your burner connected thru an USB channel. Flashing thru USB can be tricky or impossible - if you can - connect it (or using another computer) thru IDE and flash it.

ATAPI/IDE CDROM drive, meaning it utilizes the IDE hard drive interface. He has a burner connected thru USB. Thats why it looks odd.

                          Hi

That may be the case, I will trust your judgement cynthia, since I have o experience in usb connected drives giving problems.

There is still the case of the DVD high compatibility option unselected in is settings... besides the rest...

I have an USB 2.0 printer attached to my PC. If i connect it thru an USB 2.0 channel it don't work. But if i connect it thru an USB 1.1 channel the thing works - but Windows complains that it is connected to a slow device.

So my thrust to USB is very divided. My motherboard (An Abit) don't have the good old serial, parallell, keyboard and mouse connections. Only a lot of USBs.

And yes - the settings should be altered.

I have USB 2.0 mass storage devices that sometimes(every time after a while) I have to disconnect/reconnect because they cease to be available in windows???

This is connected to 2.0 USB ports (See system Info link for more info on my machine), Even though no settings for this are causing this it somehow goes to "sleep".

                              Good old windows eh?
