I too have had similar problems with the 8x disk by memorex and not a problem with the 4x. I've d/l'd the firmware upgrade for my plextor 716a drive and the disks burned fine but just won't play on my rig or my dvd player or playstation. I have burned a working copy of a dvd on a 8x at the write speed of 4x. That just seems like a waste to me, is it just memorex, has anyone else tried different media brands at 8x?

You will probably need a firmware upgrade. But ditch the Memorex - they now are CMC which are seen as very poor quality media. See http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I use Riteks +R code R03 and have never had a coaster. But it's very important what the media code is - the branding is meaningless. For example, Verbatim have just gone from a "good" manufacturer to CMC and they stink now. Same brand, same packaging, different product! IMHO, it's false advertising.
So you must ask what the media code is.
Store clerks are hopeless in this regard - online suppliers are better - call them first and ask them. And make sure they guarantee it.
Now, you need to be aware of one other very important thing. It's no good having the best media out there if your burner doesn't like it. So check out compatibility with your burner here.
Remember, you get what you pay for in this game. Buy good stuff and care for it well and it will outlast your great great great great grandkids (not kidding - they should last 200+ years). Buy crap, and it won't play well (if at all).
Oh! btw: Stop ripping off my avatar!!!!!!

I;m also having a problem with memorex 8x. I've been using memorex 4x for some time and have rarely had a problem. My burns have consistenly worked on both dvd players in our house. I just bought some memorox 8x. Now my burns will only work on 1 of the dvd players. The other dvd player will not run the memorex 8x (although it runs hp 8x and my memorex 4x). Any thoughts on this problem or any solutions?Comment
