4x or 8x disc?

If my DVD burner is capable of burning a DVD-R disc at 8x speed, are the 8x DVD-R disc preferred, or can I get the 4x disc? I would like to burn as slow as possible being that I seem to always get errors during the lead out.

So, my question is... If my DVD burner is capable of buring a DVD-R at 8x, can I use a 4x disc and burn at say 1x or 2x? Or should I get a 8x disc, and burn at say 1x / 2x or 4x?

There will be no "Visual" qualitative difference by burning at 2X or 1X.

You were helping me in my other thread here...

Currently have the Lite-On LDW-811s DVD burner with the newest firmware. Disc are the Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. "MCC 02RG20". When using the newest versions of DVD shrink and nero, it burns 100%, then fails on the lead out and cannot close the disc

I wanted a dual layer burner for the fututre when blank media prices drop, so I figured I would use my $100 best buy certificate I have had laying around and pick up a new burner. Hopefully the new burner will solve my problems and/or be able to read the MCC media better.

Verbatim 8x discs I presume? Your Nero - is it updated with latest updates from Nero? Could you post your latest log from Nero? You find it here: C:\Program\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log (please erase your serialnumber before posting).

Noticed that Verbatim 4x discs are out of business. Used the 8x discs on my own old NEC1300A with max 4x speed capacity and they worked.

I am having problems with the 4x ProDisc which have a media code of "MCC 02RG20" (Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.). I un-installed nero and re-installed it so it whiped out my log files. I will try a new burn and report the log file (probably tomorrow). I usually decrypt with DVD Decrypter version 3.5.1.0 / re-author to shrink the files with DVD shrink version 3.2.0.15 / burn with Nero version 6.6.0.1. With these disc, it always fails to write the lead out

Couple questions...

First off, I was looking into getting the Verbatim DataLifePlus 8X DVD-R (white inkjet hub printable w/ no stack ring), product #94854. Will these disk have a manufacture name of Verbatim with the media code "94854" or will they be labeled as something else such as my ProDisc labeled as Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. with the "MCC 02RG20" code?

Secondly, how do I determine my disc are grade "a" as labeled or defects, seconds, etc? buy.com has a spindle of 50 Verbatim DataLifePlus 8X DVD-R (white inkjet hub printable w/ no stack ring [product #94854] disc for $38 shipped which seems to good to be true, but they are authorized dealers according to www.verbatim.com

As I was typing, I was checking out the Nero info tool under "system ASPI", in which it says "ASPI installation is corrupted". Under "Nero ASPI" it says "ASPI is installed and working properly". How do I go about fixing the "system ASPI"? Could this be the cause of my lead out erros?

Can you give me a list or link of adjustments I should be using for nero / DVD shrink / DVD decrypter, other than the defaults?

What O/S do you have? Nero uses it's own ASPI and DVDDecrypter uses SPTI. So I don't think that that is creating the problems.

If you burn with DVDDecrypter the default settings should work out well.

For Nero you could check out this page:

I also think that you should try with RW discs until you have done a good burn with such a disc before wasting your R discs.

I do see slight differences between the two... Does this mean I am better off not purchasing the Verbatim disc since they will give me the same results?

I am using winXP with SP2. Do you know how I can fix my "system ASPI" even if its not the cause?

I did pick up a DVD-RW disc, but when I try to burn, nero says its not blank and say it will have to format it, in which I select yes. There is then a 2 min count down, and it does its thing. For the time passed, I have let it sit up to 45 min before and it has yet to finish, so I gave up on that idea. I'll try to pick up another DVD-RW tomorrow when I go to best buy.

Think you have two drivers with same version 4.6 perhaps and two with 4.1.72 perhaps.

I ended up fixing the "system ASPI" by re-installing it. I then un-installed dvd shrink, DVD decrypter and Nero, and re-installed them as well. I then tried to burn "The Day After Tomorrow" again, and ended up making another coaster

So... I took a trip to best buy and picked up a Pioneer DVR-108 burner. Got it installed today, and have burned 3 movies flawlessly with the same Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. "MCC 02RG20" disc. Not only did I burn them flawlessly with no CRC read errors at 4x speed, my burner allows me to burn them disc and 8x and 12x Only problem I encounter now is that my PS2 does not like them disc, so its time to pick up a real DVD player

Needless to say, after 2 weeks I am finally a happy man. Guess my Lite-On just crapped out on me or something.
